i got an bulletin e-mail from the news source ananova and cnn earlier about the plane crash in queens. they're running an ongoing story at the guardian, but details are scarce. what's happening? everyone's talking about it, but noone knows what to think.
the plane flew out of jfk for the dominican republic. it got to 13,000 feet before eyewitnesses saw an explosion on the side of the plane, and the wing and engine fell down seperately away from the main crash site in a queens suburb. around 250 people died including passengers and crew, and twelve buildings were ablaze. the authorities have ruled out terrorist involvement for now, but how can anyone avoid jumping to conclusions? roads and tunnels have been closed to all but emergency services and mayor giuliani has already visited the crash site.
we have to consider the possibility that this was a terrorist attack. it is difficult to tell what kind of effect that scenario would have on the anti-war movement, the anti-capitalist movement, the economy... there are so many possible questions for us to face. there have just been too many shocks recently for some people to bear and the world could be creeping towards an even more dangerous instability. i don't want to jump to conclusions at the moment, but i can't help myself. all i can say for certain is that my sympathies go out to the victims of this terrible disaster. god knows new yorkers have enough to cope with at the moment without this further tragedy.
