If you aren't already running a distributed computing program, check out WCG:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
It's in the ubuntu repository as "boinc", and the windows installer is very simple.
Basically it uses your computer to run programs for scientists. There are dozens of projects you can opt in or out of. If it slows your PC down, you can tell it to just run at night, or to use fewer resources. Currently I'm only running [email protected] because I want to get laid more, and the researchers seem to be doing really good work with the results. Most of the projects have to do with developing treatments for diseases.
My team is called "we blame capitalism" and all are welcome to join. It hasn't been active for a while because I totally forgot to reinstall it and my team mates disappeared off the face of the earth. But now the three cores of my computer which consistently work are churning out science once every 1/3.8x10^9 seconds.
edit: oops there were already threads on this:

Oh well, doesn't hurt to remind people.
