View Full Version : Paris Commune Day!

A silly idea I had for a left-wing "holiday," partially born out of my disliking of traditional holidays. Pretty much just as it says on the tin. To be celebrated on the date of the Paris Commune's founding, March 18.

Possible traditions:

Building a barricade
Exchanging "proletarian" gifts
Wearing red

Thoughts? :D

Fine for those in countries that have maintained a May Day tradition. I am a lifelong resident of the USA where the May Day tradition has been badly eroded. The first "holiday" task for those of us living is the USA is to strive to bring back the May Day tradition.

If this thing started in the morning wouldn't we all end up guillotined by nightfall?

the commune burnt the guillotine. more likely we'd end up shot in a cemetery.

Good that I got that cleared up. To the cemetery it is.

Getting marched to a cemetery is usually not a good sign

Other celebrations include:

not attacking the government when you have the advantage
not expropriating banks

Well I guess we can just call it "working out", right?

It's make believe to think they ever had enough strength to attack the government proper and win. It relied on revolt in other cities (which all failed) or rural areas rising up (which they didn't) or soldier mutinies like the ones of the 18th March happening later on (which they sadly didn't). on it's own Paris couldn't have taken down france.

not expropriating banks
bank singular.

yeah I was being a killjoy.

I guess technically but it seems very unlikely they would have succeeded as they didn't have many weapons, were not a trained army so no matter how bad the street fighting went in the bloody week it would have been a lot worse had they been launching an assault from more open ground and finally because they would have effectively had to give up paris to march to versailles leaving it open for grabs. I might well have got a lot of things wrong here but I think the only chance they had was to gain more support out of paris but like every revolution it failed from isolation.

Aye, from what i read, the government army was routed and badly demoralized after the prussians pounded the shit out of them.

Im sure the prussians wouldnt have let paris win either though as it may have created another problem for them.
