First of all I am totally anti PC, for example when Tracy Morgan ranted that homophobic stuff I think the correct response should have been a discussion about why that mindset sticks, not forcing him to say sorry (say sorry for what? For saying it? For thinking it? For getting caught?), which solves NOTHING and does'nt address anything, other than pretend to brush it under the Rug. I think the same thing with the seindfeld guy that was yelling racist stuff, in his case I think he was just throwing everything he had against a heckler.
Anyway, my problem is people, specifically on the right, who want to say racist things, so masogonistic things, say homophobic things, using whatever language (its almost always masked), and then demand to NOT be called racist, homophobic or sexist, and say your being PC if you do.
No, it is not political correctness to call out bigotry when you see it, its honesty, right wingers need to stop whining about it.
Even jokes about it, if its obvious that a joke is intended to convay a certain thought, YES its ok to start a conversation about what thought its trying to convay, that is not policial correctness.

I am also anti-PC, after the damn "personal computer revolution" we have just had these frustrating GUIs with their popups and other annoyances.
Oh wait... Are we supposed to be talking about political correctness? I don't support that much either.

My favourite political quote of all time "If Lehman Brothers had been Lehman Sisters then......Blah-blah-blah" Harriet Harman Labour Minister. Only the highly educated here even have an inkling about P.C........happily I do not mix in such circles. Though maybe if Hitler had been a woman.........?? No ....maybe I just have too much time on my hands....I'll put my brain to more productive use. What if Harriet Harman was a Socialist?....God....that's even more far fetched. I need to stop thinking or Googling British NEWS.

Political Correctness just doesn't work. And it shouldn't do. Telling someone to 'not say that', 'don't think that', just because it goes against societies 'rules' doesn't solve anything. Instead of curing their ignorance, it makes them a martyr for their beliefs, as they are punished for having an 'opinion'

For some reason I thought this thread was going to be about PCs vs Macs.
Political Correctness is a terrible idea, but more often than not the people that rail against it excessively tend to be racists. With that said, Communism is politically incorrect.

I tend to be weary of PC rules since I'm the type of person who'll just say something as it is. There's no use trying to sugar coat something. If a black guy commits a crime and I know without a doubt it's him then I'll say that(of course putting the blame on him just because he's black would be wrong unless you *knew* he was the one who committed the crime). Besides, if you're not racist or anything then what's the problem? Only those who are explicitly racist, homophobic, whatever will be shunned.
I do have to agree that many people rallying against it are racists though since without such barriers they could speak their minds, but like I said if a person is racist regardless of which rules are put in place then they'll be treated accordingly.

I'm not anti-PC. In fact its a good thing that when someone says something which is racist/sexist/homophobic there is someone to call them out on it, and to say that kind of shit is not okay. The anti-PC crowd is just there to victimize themselves because people are no longer okay with their abusive language.

One thing I hate is when people say things like
"Oh black people STATISTICALLY commit more crime, its not racist, its just a fact, stop being PC, you can't call me racist."
When all you need to do is look further into the statistics, use poverty, yeah, POOR people (not taking into account race) commit much more (blue collar) crime than wealtheir people, and guess what, black people are disproportionately more poor, why? Well if you look at historical context, ghettoization, discrimination and so on, it makes sense.
The fact that someone would just ignore all that stuff, which is well documented and widely known, and just take one statistic out of context and say "Seee, this shows black people are more prone to crime," shows that this guy has racist tendancies ...
And its NOT being politically correct to point that it, what it IS being is intellectually honest.

Yea, people do say that, but like I said racist people will be shunned anyway. If a person isn't racist then they wouldn't say racist things to begin with regardless of whether PC rules exist or not.

Another thing that is silly (on the PC side), is people being made to apologise publically, its meaningless and basically turns the attention just to the saying of certain words or phrases rather than actual phenomenon that exist in society.

Yeah, like this European kid of 6 years old being rightly expelled from his school for asking an African kid why his skin was dark. Those who say this is "political correctness gone mad" are just racists!

lol have you got a source for that, sounds like a Daily Mail story?
And more often than not yes, it's used by people who moan about not being able to use the term "gollywog", "spastic" etc. or people who fabricate and exaggerate stories like "our kids aren't allowed to sing baa baa black sheep!!", or "we're not allowed to celebrate Christmas because of Muslims", "we're not allowed to fly England flags" and so on. It's sensationalism at it's worst, half the claims of political correctness are myths or lack any real basis, and half of them are people outraged that they word "paki" is considered offensive.

Of course, I think it should be noted that conservatives certainly aren't anti-pc at all. Go into a room full of them and say fuck the troops and you'll see what I mean.

While I agree with some of what RGacky and others are saying, I find that most of the people who boast about "not being politically correct" really mean to say "I expect you to find my bigotry endearing."

I'm not really sure what you're getting at or how the two relate, but ok. Perhaps you misunderstood. All I'm saying is that if a person is racist, homophobe, whatever they're going to continue being that way regardless of what society does. Same with people who aren't discriminatory. If those people aren't going to say anything discriminatory then why have the whole PC thing in the first place?

I think PC serves as a liberal substitution for equality. Instead of doing any real effort to make minority groups part of society we can get all worked up that someone makes a bad joke. PC and "tolerance" implies the curious notion that you can still be progressive and against discrimination without actually having anything to do with those you "tolerate" - they can live in their separate communities and all is good as long as everyone keeps from uttering the magic curse words. The things you tolerate are things you would rather be without - like noise. Minorities should not be "tolerated" they should be included as equal members of society.
I find the entire ritual of people who had a slip of the tongue making public apologies rather absurd. I would rather have racists and bigots use their native language of slurs instead of having them use deceptive newspeak that makes them sound moderate.

your fallacy is in thinking PC is a Thing beyond not being racist/sexist/fucked up
also then asking people not be fucked up towards your own identity
do you see the conflict inherent here
