View Full Version : My bookshelf looks weird.

My parents are pretty right-wing, and they send me free market/anti-government propaganda every now and then. So I have a stack of communist books and literature intermixed with a bunch of free market books/literature. If detectives were to investigate my reading habits they'd be extremely confused, it's a veritable soup of leftist and rightist wingnuttery. "Books by Bakunin and Mao and...a book about how we need to 'end the Fed'? What the fucking fuck?"

I just noticed this.

Mine's looks like that too, but I usually buy those right wing books for my own enjoyment. I do not know why, but I like to get a good laugh out of reading about why we should return to the Gold Standard or why Operation Just Cause was not a bad idea. Sometimes I look at my bookshelf and say, "What the fuck" and my parents are like, "there's something wrong with you."

If somebody judged me by my bookshelf they'd probably think I was a smug bastard. Or someone who likes fucked up stories. The latter part is true.

I only have a couple of leftist books ... a Marx collection, Malcolm X's autobiography, and The Coming Insurrection. And a string theory book. That's not leftist, though ... but it's like "opposition physics" I guess?

My mother got me a bookshelf for graduation and I can't decide how I want to organize it. My first idea was to just separate it by genre (fiction, philosophy, history) and then by last name of author. But then I wanted to separate them by subject (Enlightenment, Russian Revolution, existentialism, black liberation, etc.). But then I couldn't decide how to organize the fiction books. I'm probably obsessing over it too much.

The only right wing material I have on my shelf atm is Friedman and Hayek, mainly for arrogant self-righteous reasons of presenting myself as a well-rounded sophisticate. But I also don't consider myself to be intellectually superior to them either so I just leave those bad boys up there.

No books by Mao though.

I organize my bookshelf based on the height and thickness of the book.

No matter how you do it, it won't ever stay organised. I have a whole wall set aside as a bookcase, but I have books all over the house (the majority of which seem to be in the bathroom). I have a copy of Atlas Shrugged propping up a piano though, but the piano itself has the collected works of Lenin all over the top of it.

I can't fit all my books in my apartment so I have to store the majority of them (300+) at my grandmother's house. I keep a select bunch though, divided by genre: poetry, fiction, politics, philosophy.

My bookcase has a lot of leftist books, along with a lot of books on history, geneaology, creative writing, reference books, books on/about Liverpool FC and a few random books by various authors such as Ursula Le Guin, Haruki Murakami, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and Franz Kafka. I have quite a few GB of ebooks on an external hard drive, mostly random, with some books from feedbooks (where the books are mostly free to download), especially those by Cory Doctorow.

Mine's like that too.

I have around 400 books in physical copy (I haven't read them all yet). Ranging from fascist works, like Hitler's 'Mein Kampf'' and Gentile's 'The doctrine of Fascism'. Then there's the typical leftist works, like Das Kapital vol 1 - 3, etc. I've got books by Ayn Rand, Friedman, etc. Then there's philosophy books, ranging from pre-socratics to modern day dudes like Daniel Dennet and on logic, etc, etc. Then there's science, literature, history, economics, geo-politics, war-strategy, chess strategy, etc, etc. I've got pretty much every Chomsky book, you know, that guy everyone on here vehemently despises.

Over 400 books??? I only have like 10 books on a desk, not even in a shelf.

Reading e-books infuriates me. I like physical copies. Hence, I have a reasonable amount. I've got a list of 1000+ (non-fiction) that I want to read. I don't know whether I'll get the chance to do it, Ill probably be dead before I can finish. Unlike fiction, academic books require astute reading, sometimes these books need to be read several times. Otherwise I forget! And English is my third language! And then there's university and work! And women and partying/bars and beer! Immortality would solve my predicament.

I probably have over 400 books, but I really, really, really, like books. In fact, I had to ban myself from going into any bookstores for over a year because I would buy books with money I couldn't afford to spend. I'd just buy whatever looked good: fiction novels which were hardbound and had nice font, pages, etc...; poetry anthologies from any poet which I remotely liked; any political book which seemed important or useful; any philosophy book by any number of philosophers; reference books if they seemed pretty and useful, etc...

It was a real problem. Now I can go into a used bookstore and not by anything, although I have a list of books I've been looking to find used so if one of them is there then I gotta get it...

I personally have a lot of books,3 shelves,(quite big) but my grandfather had, during some points of his life, some 10.000 books (Everything written by 'leftist' authors from 1948-1990) .I am not sure if that is true, but i remember that he donated a whole truck to a local library.I am not sure if he still has as much, probably not.

I don' have enough bookshelves. As soon as my brother moves out, I'm going to my grandmother's to take the totes of books she has of my family's, and I'm replacing his bed with a bookshelf or 4.

I really need to beef up my nonfiction, though. The only nonfiction I can see from where I'm sitting is The Basics of Sociology, Star Wars, and The Guitar Book.

I love books! I don't have nearly as many as I'd like though, because I don't have any income currently, so I have to resort to the public library (which is actually really, really good). Even then, I've got an entire bookshelf filled up with books I've already read, and around four more of my mother's mystery books (she seems to only read mystery, Stephen King, and Dean Koontz).

I have the same problem. Although i've managed to limit the money spent by buying everything secondhand. Another problem is shelf space. I have two full height shelves double stacked, I'm ashamed to say its mostly mindless entertainment, but theres a fair amount of political texts too.

I used to have a massive book collection but then I got into second hand bookstores where you can turn in old books for new (to you) books. I've read a lot more because of that.

I think my current book number hovers just under 300. I had a bookshelf, but after my Christmas wishlist was fulfilled, the new reading material caused it to collapse. What I get for buying a twelve dollar WalMart bookshelf, eh?

My claim to fame is the variety of languages my books are in. I don't mean just language learning textbooks, either. I'm talking novels, nonfiction...one's a biology textbook. :D Currently I've got books in English, Chinese, Finnish, Hungarian, Croatian, and Russian. Not bad for an American, I'd say.
