View Full Version : iPad 3

The new specs, in a nutshell:

- 2048x1536 (4 times the resolution on the iPad 2), 264 pixels per inch
- 44% better color saturation
- Dualcore A5X processor (a claimed 4 times faster than the Nvidea Tegra 3)
- An iSight camera of 5 megapixels, using the same stabilisation technology as featured in the iPhone 4S, capable of shooting video in 1080p HD

I was thinking about buying a tablet and considering the iPad or the Asus Transformer Prime. But I think the iPad is going to be the winner here

Are you going to buy one?

On a more serious note - yeah, you probably should get it if you want to. I find that things like this won't become outdated for a while.

All useless bourgeois stuff. Remember how workers in China make our iPads.

Communism is a political position, not a lifestyle, it's important to remember that. Our own personal purchasing decisions are not going to have any impact on the capitalist system, so might as well enjoy it IMHO.

While I dislike Apple and I dislike the entire concept of tablets, I still feel the need to say this: Communism isn't a life-style. Whatever we do we will always be subject to the capitalism until that system is brought to an end. If I buy a t-shirt it has been made by workers, if I buy toothpaste it is is made by workers, if I buy a table it has been made by workers. And there will almost always be capitalist profiting from it.

The only way to avoid such a thing would mean isolation and pretty much primitivism.

While this is correct.

I still find late-capitalist consumerism to be distasteful, even sickening. Commodity fétichisme is a scourge upon the earth.

After a year you can still sell that iPad 2 for at least half the original price and you use that money to buy a new one with a nice discount.

That's true, but the problem is I've already done that. I had an iPad 1, and then sold it last year to get the iPad 2. If you do that every year, you start losing a lot of money to the point where I don't think it's worth it. In another year I might get the iPad 4.

What I am more interested in is the possible merger of the macbook pro and macbook air lines. If I could get something that has the form factor of the air, but the power to play shit like Left 4 Dead, then that would be great.

Personally I like my iPad a lot. I stock it up with PDFs and it makes a great reader. Do not go for 7' tablets if you plan on reading PDFs.. I say this from experience.

Well I think the key thing is to be able to enjoy consumer products while still realizing what is wrong with them, and not become obsessed. With that said, there are a lot of people that are fucking obsessed with Apple, and it's sad as fuck.

Looks like someone figured out how to install CyanogenMod 7 (a third-party android distribution) on the Kindle Fire, but it's not perfect: http://liliputing.com/2011/12/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-7-on-the-amazon-kindle-fire.html

You may want to check out the XDA Developer board's Kindle Fire section, but keep in mind most of the stuff there is for hobbyists/hackers and not people looking for an out-of-the-box stable system: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1309

That is my main concern (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1937360) as well. There is a project on it (http://www.libimobiledevice.org/), but so far there is no iOS 5.1 support and there is little known on the iPad 3.

piet11111

Apple has a very obvious interest in making compatibility with other products impossible and as such i can not buy one of their products if that ties me to them exclusively.

(not that i want a tablet unless its a viable alternative to my create zen xfi 32gb for music video's but with those puny hard drives its not any better)

Wow.... I wasn't talking about the environmental aspects, I'm talking about fucking time wasting and engaging in healthcare, which is what my career involves.

Patient interaction, how can I do that with tons of paperwork? The iPad ensures that I can make real quick notes and send them to multiple doctors and nurses from the bed side.

Now can you see why tablets are helpful? It isn't about this bullshit 'moral consumerism' that you're on about, it's about increasing productivity in my work place.

Yeah, holding a laptop in one arm, whilst typing and talking to the patient is real easy, bro! I assume you're some kind of physician who's also a magician and can do shit like that.

Tablets are easier to transport, small, lighter and more accessible than a laptop.

Ah, yeah, I wouldn't care if what i was using at work as an iPad or a Galaxy note. Tablets make working in hospitals a much easier task, something Rafiq couldn't appreciate. He can stick to traditional styles in his work place, but if I'm working in healthcare, I need something to be simple, quick, light and easy to use. Tablets do the job great.

As a sidenote: I ended up buying a Kindle instead. It just fits my needs of reading a lot better (as e-ink screens are much easier on the eyes). But I can totally imagine how ipads would save a ton of time in a workplace environment. Much less redtape and all that.

The Ipads and tablets in general look like really fun toys, but I can't justify that pricetag, to be honest. Some of the non-apple offerings are a little better in that regard, but out of reach for me without some saving.

A Nook or a Kindle are probably more my thing -- especially with how nice those displays are.

I wouldn't mind having an iPad, though. If I could use it at school I totally would, but my school has a rather draconian mandate against electronic devices. Which is hilarious 'cause people are clearly wearing the latest iteration of the iPod nano as wristwatches.
