The 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Indians was not the first official Thanksgiving. On June 20, 1676, following the massacre over King Philip and 700-800 Pequot Indians in Connecticut, the council of Charlestown, Massachusetts unanimously voted to proclaim June 29. 1676, as a day of celebration and Thanksgiving. The following statement was read:
"The Holy God having by a long and Continual Series of his Afflictive dispensations in and by the present Warr with the Heathen Natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his own Covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgments he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his Footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular Intimations of his Fatherly Compassion, and regard; reserving many of our Towns from Desolation Threatened, and attempted by the Enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our Confederates many signal Advantages against them, without such Disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, It certainly bespeaks our positive Thankfulness, when our Enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many Intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our Complaints in the time of pressing Afflictions."

In the eight century Muslims conquered
Spain, Portugal and France and controlled it for 700 years
They never mention this in history class
cause o'fays are threatened when you get the real lesson
Moors from Baghdad, Turkey threatened European Christians
Meaning, the white way of life; hence the Crusades for Christ
On November 25th, 1491
Santiago defeats the last Muslim stronghold, Grenada
King Ferdinand gave thanks to God for victory
And the Pope of Rome and declared this date to forever be
A day of "Thanksgiving" for all European Christians
.. Now listen, when you celebrate "Thanksgiving"
What you are actually celebratin
is the proclamation of the Pope of Rome
Who later, in league with Queen Isabella
sent Cardinal Ximenos to Spain
to murder any blacks that resisted Christianity
These Moors, these black men and women
were from Baghdad, Turkey
And today, you eat the turkey, for your "Thanksgiving" day
as the European Powers destroyed the Turkeys
Who were the forefathers of your mothers and fathers
Now fight the power,-Ras Kass "The Nature of The Threat"

Oh cut the crap already!
Thanksgiving may started because of bad reasons, but these situations and reasons are long gone. Not celebrating Thanksgiving is not a protest that would help any political cause.
As a jew, I celebrate Lag Baomer. It symbolizes reogiouse fanatism and a nationalist rebel against the will of the people, but I still celebrate it. Why? BECAUSE IT'S A FRIGGIN' NICE HOLIDAY! No matter what the reasons for having it are, they don't exist anymore because there is no roman empire anymore, and sitting around a fire is f*cking nice!
So no, it won't help any native-american if you won't it a Turkey. It might make you feel abit better, but it will make no political statement. Would it stop the white settlers from taking over indian lands? NO! Why? Because it happend centuries ago!
So I say just eat that Turkey (unless you're vegetarians) and enjoy the quality time with your family or something, and forget the causes of the holiday. They don't matter anyway. You get planty of chances for showing your political ideas, Thanksgiving is just not a good enough chance to do so.

Actually, I've always been curious why lefties "celebrate" any official holidays (holy days).
Is it just a kind of "inertia"? Lefties are supposed to actually think about what things really mean, aren't they?
I know, going against "custom" is often even harder than political dissent. People are apt to look at you like you're a "nutball".
Nevertheless, I've been totally indifferent to official holidays for many decades...and mostly gotten away with it. I don't nag anyone else about it (except in this post)...I just don't go along with any of the sentiment or the rituals.
I don't see any point to it...it's all fake.

It's part of culture.
I've a lot of Chinese friends who are Catholics, but they still celebrate Chinese New Year, Chap Goh Mei, and harvest festivals and stuff.
And they can't explain it, either.

Here (http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=30&ItemID=4570)
is a good article on thanksgiving. I think the act of "celebrating" the enslavering and attempted genocide of a race as rather repugnant. I'm not an America but it's the same with Australia Day here. It may not do any good not to celebrate it but by celebrating it, aren't we somewhat legitimising what actually happened ?
The argument it happened a long time ago is used by conservatives with regards to slavery and I would hardly think the idea of a "Slavery Day" would go down well.
It's also used as a means to enforce Nationalism, we have to give thanks to live in the "greatest country on earth" or whatever that may be.
Enjoy time with your family , sure but you don't need a reason or a special day to do that.

This is a great topic. I feel Thanksgiving Day is a holiday created by imperialists in order to give dissatisified people the opportunity to let off steam. Those who are disadvantage economically are told repeatedly by the media, politicians, and the pathetic clergy to give "thanks" for the meager portion of the "American dream" consigned to them. While the rich can wallow in their filth with their complacency and superiority.

There are some holidays worth actively fighting, holidays with no redeeming value. Columbus Day, most notably... There are holidays that should be at least reconsidered... the jingoism and militarism promoted by Independence Day in the U.S., consumerism's best friend--Christmas, and probably Thanksgiving--for all the misleading pseudo-history it promotes, and how that distorts our understanding of Native peoples.
That said, Thanksgiving for me is a day off from the daily grind, and have a wonderful feast. An off day and good food--what's not to love about that?

Most of my family doesn't even KNOW what Thanksgiving is all about. I told my mother the other day and she said "really? its about indians?" Lol....so we have a Salvadoran Thanksgiving by using the holiday for a very well deserved day off, watch football, eat Salvadoran turkey sandwiches whilst I wear my shirt that says "Thanksgiving" in blood and on the back each letter making comments about what the colonialists did to the Native Americans. (Rape our women, kill our ppl..etc etc) I don't think having a day off and sandwiches is exactly "celebrating" the massacre.....I think its worse to see those ppl who drop off cans and measly shit, then go the next morning to spend money on a bunch of plasma screens...
