SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A century after the Titanic disaster, scientists have found an unexpected culprit of the crash: the moon.
Anyone who knows history or blockbuster movies knows that the cause of the ocean liner's accident 100 years ago next month was that it hit an iceberg.
"But the lunar connection may explain how an unusually large number of icebergs got into the path of the Titanic," said Donald Olson, a Texas State University physicist whose team of forensic astronomers examined the moon's role.

The ironic thing in most of the rich guys in 1st class got away on lifeboats while all the proles in 3rd class drowned.

Although some rich folks died, which I suppose isn't so bad. :D

The sinking of the Titanic led to a change in Maritime Law, making it a legal requirement that passenger ships must have sufficient lifeboat capacity for ALL peeps onboard.

The Titanic had nowhere near enough places for every passenger, and reports from the sinking indicate that some lifeboats sailed away with as little as 12 occupants, when they could accommodate about 50, I think.

Astonishingly, the Titanic actually had more lifeboat capacity, than it was required to do so under the then existing laws. Other liners had far less capacity.

This change in the Law, was one of the few good things to come out of the disaster. That and it make people reflect on the over-confidence put in technology over Nature.

On the topic of interesting theories pertaining to the Titanic, I remember reading about a 'conspiracy' theory that was doing the rounds at the time. Some people maintain, that it wasn't the Titanic that sank, but her sister ship, the RMS Olympic. It was suggested that the name plates on the ships were changed before sailing. Something to to do with an insurance scam, apparently.

i know you guys are having a laugh with this.... but... just thought i would put a few things straight here....
the vast majority of the passengers that perished were steerage and third class
80% of men on board died
nearly 50% of children on board died
i think 30% of women on board died.

i can guarantee that there were almost no lower class passengers allowed in the lifeboats. no they were locked up below.
like you, i would like to think of the whole diseaster as natural justice....
but, in truth i think it was more a case of..... same old... same old...

The weirdest thing is the highest percentage of fatalities on the Titanic were second class men of whom 92% died, versus 84% of third class men. Also more third class women were saved (46%) then first class men (33%). So I don't think it is fair to say the third class was completely fucked over when it came to life boats
