Last night, I saw a local program called "Manos Habierta"(Open Hands) that had a man by the name of Dariel Alarcon Ramirez. He went by the Cuban Revolutionary Guerilla alias of "Benigno" This guy knew El Che PERSONALLY. He fought in the cuban revolution and was one of castros trusted colonels. At his peak he was the "Jefe de Seguridad de Industria Chimica" (Chief of Security for the Chemical Industry), and in the cuban Special forces in Angola, under General Ochoa's command.

He told about how he killed people for the revolution and that after they had succeeded, that many commanding officers got mansions as a present from castro. He talked about how after the revolution, there was no thought on philosophies, or ideals. He said that they had simply won and that they had earned those gifts. But he DID think EVERYONE was going to have houses and TVs like castro had promised them.

He then told the story of how after a while..he had seen the promises disappear one by one. He started becoming disillusioned after a while and started showing it. It was then when castro decided to punish him, by naming him "Jefe De Fuerza De Trabajo" (Chief of the Labor Force). This brought him face to face with prison and labor camps. His main office was at the Bahia Grande Prison that housed 6900 prisoners. There, he said, he witnessed acts of cruelty and the torture of prisoners. He said he'd look the other way when this happened because he didn't want to stir anymore crap with castro. He mentioned that back when the US$ was forbidden to be carried, people would get 6mo to 10 years in prison for being caught with $1 to $10!!!

He talked about how the great General Ochoa...Commander of all cuban troops in Angola, hailed by castro as the First Hero of the Republic, one of the most important figures in cuba....AND castro's personal friend...was sentenced to death by fidel himself when he [castro] saw that the military was following Ochoa a little too closely!

This guy actually KNEW El Che personally. He's going to be on the show again tonight, and I'm thiking of calling in to ask him a few questions. I just don't know WHAT to ask him!

On DTMS this week they had a documentary on El CHe as well. They also showed the doc on Castro and Kennedy, the private history. I was so hoping to tape this weeks series on Cuba, but my VCR keeps spitting tapes back out at me.

Castro_s, if they run it again, I'll borrow someone elses machine and tape it. Hey make a tape of your show and I'll make one and lets exchange!

The credibility of that is blown away straight away by your complete manipulation of the Ochoa affair. You try and turn a criminal involved in drug dealing into a martyr. Nothing is too low for the Miami anti-castro brigade.

First of all......its funny how you ASSUMED I'm from Miami.

Second, if you'll notice my post c a r e f u l l y, you'll notice that I didn't say it....your friendly neighborhood cuban revolutionary Dariel Alarcon Ramirez aka 'Benigno'...a man that fought With El Che, killed people WITH El Che, and held a very high post in cuba, uttered those words!!!! I thought I wrote that pretty clearly don't you think?

Debora, what he's talking about is the spin castro put on it to justify his executing Ochoa. Afterall, how else would you be able to get away with executing the "First Hero of the Republic" in the eyes of the cuban people? Simple...you pin a drug smuggling charge on him! You see, for the longest time, Ochoa was dealing in stolen Diamonds and sending them back to cuba from angola (when he commanded the cuban troops there). This was done to boost the economy of cuba. Apparently, there was A LOT of money funnelled (ie stolen) from africa in the form of diamonds, etc. When Ochoa came back from angola as a hero, castro noticed that the troops he commanded (quite a large number), were VERY faithful to Ochoa. When the economy started to sag, and the military started to feel the pinch, Ochoa made the mistake of regarding the military as "his troops". Like, "Commandante fidel, my troops are lacking the necessary supplies to.....". I can only imagine that castro got nervous at this....not long afterwards, the drug charges came up...and mr hero, general ochoa was sent in front of a firing squad!

But again....don't take my word for it.....there are MANY unbiased books out there stating this.

Okay I will have to research this topic, a new one on me!

But it does lead to my next question, are there drugs in Cuba? And what kind? Maybe I'm naive, but i thought Cuba would be drug free.

No no....I think you're correct... I don't think castro has allowed much (if any)drug use on the island...of course as with everything, there are those that can get it anywhere. For the most part, I think the island IS drug free (unless anyone can prove something different). I HAVE heard of the island being a stop off point for shipments from elsewhere in Latin America, but as for the popular masses using them...i dont think so. Of course, I WON'T go as far as saying he HASN'T accepted drug money in return for "services". Afterall, somthing has to pay for those FARC boys down in Columbia.

I'm not even going to get into the Ochoa thing. You have your mind made up, whatever. I've debated this whole thing more than once.

As far as drugs, there is herb and some coke from what I hear. Hard drugs are almost non-existent and even herb is not as prevelant as most other Carribean nations. That's pretty damn good for being so close to Jamaica.
