I have been meaning to put this thread up for a while -

The current Fine Gael/Labour Coalition government in Ireland is implementing a €100 flat rate household tax in Ireland as a prelude to imposing a household tax that will impose a charge expected to be in the region of €800-€1000 per household plus water charges. The charge is to be applied to those who register before 31 March. The government has threatened to impose fines of €2500 for those who do not register and impose fines for late payment.

In opposition to the Household Tax - the Socialist Party, the United Left Alliance and others on the left have launched the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes ( http://nohouseholdtax.org (http://nohouseholdtax.org/) )

The CAHWT has campaigned on the platform of 'Don't Register - Don't Pay'

After two months of constant government and media propaganda approximately 8% of those liable to the Household Charge have registered and paid - that leaves 92% of the population still defying the right-wing Irish government and the EU/ECB/IMF. The Campaign is now the largest campaign of opposition to government proposals in Ireland since the massive taxation protests and campaign in 1979. It has to potential to dramatically alter the situation in what is see as the 'good boy' of Europe who are accepting the austerity of the troika.

The campaign has also taken up the opposition to attempts by the government to impose a €50 registration charge for rural households with septic tanks for the inspection of the tanks. Many septic tanks will require thousands of euro of remedial works to comply with new EU regulations. The government have already been forced to climbdown on this issue - dropping the registration fee to €5 - yet defiance is still at unprecedented levels as people realise the registration fee is the thin edge of the wedge. The CAHWT has taken up the challange and demanded that the government provide much needed jobs by funding any necessary remedial works for septic tanks.

Thousands have joined the campaign - hundreds of meetings have been held all over the country. Some small towns have seen hundreds of people turning out to meetings and joining the campaign. Thousands have participated in demonstrations and protests in towns all over the country with government representatives being confronted every where they go.

As for the other political parties - all the right-wing parties have supproted the charge. Sinn Fein have declared their opposition to the charge but have given cover to the government by repeating the threats of the government by refusing to back non-registration and refusing to support non-payment (because it would be irresponsible.

With three weeks to go to the deadline for registration less than 1 out of every 8 households have paid. So far about 200,000 out of more than 1.6 million have paid. More than 63,000 households a day would have to pay for full compliance. Mass non-payment is a reality.

3,000 anti-Household Tax activists attended a national rally against the Household Tax in the National Stadium Dublin on Saturday.

Less than 20% of households have registered and paid the Charge with less than a week to go to the registration deadline. The government are in disarray with government ministers regularly contradicting themselves on different aspects of the charge.

The propaganda from the government has been pretty solid for the last couple months regarding fines arrests etc so i'd expect there will be a rush of payment this week, although there was the first good coverage of the non-payment campaign on RTE yesterday which hopefully will dissuade some.

The Thatcher Governments in the UK, tried imposing an unjust local tax in the early 1990s. Its official name was the Community Charge - or 'Poll Tax', as the people popularly dubbed it.

The tax replaced 'the rates', which had been levied on the value of a property, not the number of people dwelling there. But the Poll Tax was a per capita tax, levied on people. Therefore, the rich or better off in their expensive and swanky accommodation saved thousands in some cases, while the poorer peeps in their council or small houses, payed hundreds more.

There was a massive campaign of civil disobedience launched, based on non-payment, and mass demonstrations too, culminating in the infamous Poll Tax riots, widely reported on at the time around the world.

The Poll Tax riots spelt the end of one of Thatcher's flagship policies, and it was dead in the water thereafter. The Tories capitulated, and abolished the Poll Tax, replacing it with a fairer Council Tax, based once again on the value of property, and not the number of people dwelling there.

So good luck, comrade.

Keep us all informed yeah

Phil Hogan - the Minister responsible for imposing the Household Charge refuses to debate with Clare Daly (Socialist Party / CWI) on national TV Prime Time current affairs programme - Hogan demanded 10 minutes of unchallanged tv time to promote the payment of the charge.

With one day to go there are still more than 1million households that have not registered or paid the Household Tax (65% of those liable) despite a massive propaganda campaign where the media have specifically excluded every commentator advocating for non-registration and non-payment - the government is in disarray - the minister responsible had to cancel a trip to and OECD meeting Paris this week and the government have engaged in widespread manipulation of figures in an attempt to claim that less than 1 million households have boycotted the tax. The scale of the non-payment campaign at this moment in time is significant greater in percentage terms than the anti-poll tax campaign in Britain 20 years ago.

Examples of the propaganda campaign from the establishment this week -

Short video compilation of contributions at the National Rally on 24 March

Close to 10,000 protested outside the Annual Conference of Fine Gael, the largest government party, yesterday 31 March. Initially the police claimed there were only 1,500 at the protest before finally giving 'official' figures of 5,000.

Irish Times Journalist, Harry McGee reported the following:
Afternoon session begins as thousands of anti-household tax protesters gather outside the National Convention Centre. I can’t remember such a large rally outside any national conference of any party.

Photo slideshow of the protest -

One million households have boycotted the tax as of the deadline for registration and payment at midnight last night - round one of the campaign has been an emphatic victory to the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes
