Mari3L's good thread on Occupy Portland has many excellent photos. How do we take good photos? I bring a camera to every event, but as I am a participant, they are usually the back of people's heads. Once, when our column was smashed by police, I have photos of cop breasts and batons in the air, but they (the police, and basically everyone else) are all headless in my photos.

I've learned a bit since then (HEIGHT!). Before a march kicks off I get in front of the column and take a few shots. At the largest march I went to, with 60,000 people, the route went under a bunch of pedestrian overpasses, so I left the group, ran ahead and went up the bridge, took some pics and rejoined my place in the column as it approached. That was my best photo so far. I've noticed the editorial team of socialist parties select a couple people to go alongside the column with a short ladder, set up, take photos and move on. The pics in their papers are always good, but they don't get to participate in the march. I would hate that.

The last couple I went to, I left the column during the last few minutes and waited in front of the terminus to get frontal shots, but the darkening light spoiled my shots. Also, I have to stand with the pigs in that situation and it makes me uncomfortable.

Anyone have any good photo advice?
