I know it might be a dumb question but I haven't been following.

What is the reason?

As a new and more powerful energy source. However, the west believes Iran is planning to use it as a weapon.

Nuclear power is an excellent energy source. There such an abundance of uranium and thorium on Earth that nuclear fission alone can power all of our energy needs for thousands of years.

Because they want to take over the world, so we need America to fight for freedom, so we can be saved.

Why not? Good for them if they're going for a cleaner and more abundant energy source.

They depend on oil for a large share of its energy generation and if they can cut that down through nuclear power they can export more.
This was the same argument used by the Americans to the shah before the islamic revolution took over.

Also Iran lacks refinery's and is forced to import a lot of its fuel consumption and this cuts into its oil wealth.

Nuclear power is allowed under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and everything they have done (that can be proven) is explicitly allowed by it.

One other thing I heard was that the cost of drilling and extraction was climbing at an alarming rate, and that there were fears Iran was approaching the "Peak Oil" point.

This is very likely.

I would also like to add that while I agree that Iran primarily wants nuclear capabilities in order to upgrade it's domestic energy production, there is a definite advantage to possessing nuclear arms as well. In the intranational theater of politics, nuclear weapons are a huge deterrent to foreign policy bullying. So this is definitely a factor.

Well yes. All of the stuff that is spilling from the bourgeois press about the "threat" of Iran is just another round of saber-rattling bullshit. On the other hand, I would not blame the Iranians one bit if they were seeking nuclear weapons. It really limits the shit they would have to put up with from the US and Israel.

Once again, and this no doubt will have to be reputed many times – Iran does not have any nuclear weapons. !!! please pass it on
