View Full Version : Banker rhymes with wanker

Some jerk of a banker who ate a $135 meal at a California restaurant left his server this $1.33 tip, along with the sneering suggestion to "get a real job." The transaction was recorded by his dining companion and evidently conflicted underling, who on his "confessional" blog Future Ex-Banker describes himself as "an admittedly willing—albeit reluctant—cog in the wheel of this increasingly ugly industry," and says his boss "so loathes the 99%" that he makes a habit of this sort of thing. The blog is now gone; apparently so is he from his job. Meanwhile, restaurant workers are fighting back nationwide and most notably in Florida, where there's a move, incredibly, to lower the minimum wage from $4.65 to $2.13.

I thought nationally it was around $7 or something and that applies to all states?
Guess I was wrong.

the minimum wage is different for workers who receive tips because the tips are supposed to make up the difference.

Georgia's tipped minimum wage is $2.13 :(
One restaurant I worked at refused to match my wage to $7.25 when my tips never made my hourly wage that high. I quit after a month (I think, maybe two months ... I needed the money bad) and he has yet to pay me my final check. He also had the balls to send his little brother next door (where I went to work afterwards, the main manager had offered me a job when I told him what this guy was doing) to say "[name] wants you to come back to talk about you working for him again." I said "Tell him I said to fuck off."

What is this shit. After reading rightist newspapers for a good hour, all I feel like is punching a boss. A minimum wage that low? Can we expropriate that fucker already.
I worked at a restaurant before too.. My boss wasn't a jerk, but he never paid me minimum wage.. even here.

Also, I live very close to Newport Beach. I should find this guy's house and throw a brick through his window that says "Sincerely, the 99%"
*not really, IDK how I'd find him or if he even lives in Newport Beach*

This just in- Late Breaking News
A young career criminal in California was arrested early this morning after allegedly plotting to attack a wealthy businessman's residence. They used the online pseudonym "Agent Ducky" in an attempt to avoid detection and attempted to enlist the help of known Communist guerrillas. Officials are not clarifying if the individual has been sent to Guantanamo Bay for further interrogation.

So let me get this shit straight. In the US the minimum wage is different in different states, so in Florida it's $7.67 per hour but if it's a job where you could potentially get a tip from a generous customer, it's $4.65 per hour? And the fuckers want to make it even lower? The unions must be sitting on their asses doing fuck all.

Federal it's $7.25 and $2.13 respectively. A lot of states just use the federal minimum. There's a growing current of people here who want no minimum wage ... usually Paulites or just conservative dicks. They say it's the "reason" we have high unemployment
Jobs paying that low usually are part-time so they don't have to give you health insurance or anything fun like that. And you usually only get around 30 hours per week, because there is almost ALWAYS an extremely strict rule in the businesses about not taking overtime pay.
So if you work 35 hours, gross pay is $253.75 .... after taxes you'll get around $200. That's less than $11,000 per year. And it's common.
Rent in my area averages $800/mo for a small apartment. At $7.25/hr that would leave less than $100 per month for everything else.
And unions are basically powerless here.

That really is fucked. Here in Australia there's an industrial relations institution called 'Fair Work Australia' which sets minimum wages and conditions for most types of work. They set these rates based on minimum wage cases submitted to them by unions and they also have to take inflation into account. There are also unfair dismissal laws, however out of ten thousand cases per year, around 20 people get reinstated. Having said all of this, violations of the minimum wage happen all the time especially when migrants are employed. Naturally unions always have to fight to prevent anti-union attacks policies being introduced by governments.

I wish we had something like that. Are the wage rates they set reasonable? As in, can you easily afford a small apartment, etc?
If anything remotely like that appeared here it would be met with cries of "SOCIALISM!!" and "CLASS WAR!!!" from the establishment and politicians. Eh, I guess shit happens.
Technically we have unemployment insurance as a protection, but in my experience they will ask your boss what happened and ignore what you say, then deny you. It's only about 1/2 of your pay anyways, and usually only for a few weeks. Welfare, as much as it's blasted by politicians, is extremely hard to get. In Georgia, you need to have a dependent child under 18 and make less than $800 per month. Food stamps are much easier to get, though it's usually only around $100/mo for a single person. Medicaid (federal healthcare) is available to people with up to 133% of the poverty line income. This varies by household size, but for one person is a little under $1200/mo. If you make, say, $1400/mo, you're fucked.

What's "reasonable" is an arbitrary percentage of the value produced by workers. Wages are definitely better than in the US if that's what you mean. Housing is extremely expensive and rents are skyrocketing, I know people who work in skilled jobs who spent half their weekly wages on rent.

Yeah, thought so. Of course welfare is always getting rolled back pretty much everywhere.
