View Full Version : Mercy Killing

I didn't know where else to put this.

Is it right to kill someone or some creature if they are dying a painful death? Is it morally right to end their life to save them from suffering?

For example; You see an injured wild animal, like a bird for instance. It had been attacked by a cat and is slowly, but painfully dying from it's wounds. Would you leave it? Or would you show compassion by quickly ending it's life?

That was a scenario I faced a few years back. I chose to kill the bird quickly to save it from anymore pain.

But when it comes to a human, what would you do? If a member of your family was terminally ill, in pain and they wanted to die, would you help them?

It's a touchy subject..But I personally believe that if a terminally ill person wishes to end their suffering, then let them. If my mother was terminally ill and she wanted me to help her end her pain; I would help her. I'd be torn about it...But it would be better than seeing her in agony.

What are your thoughts?

Idk. It'd be too hard for me to terminate a loved one.

You could get a doctor to do it I suppose, but of course even that would be painful.

I think if someone wants to end their life then they should be able to. It's their life, after all, so it's their decision.

When I was a kid I too had to put a bird down. That didn't bother me nearly as much as offing a buck though.:(

When I killed the bird, I coulden't stop crying. My parents told me I did the right thing...I guess it was just the shock that I actually took a life..Never a nice feeling, is it?

well every human being can get confused about how to live their life. We have little tantrums here about that subject on Revleft, how to proceed, even endless tangles and wrangles on what went before. Life....

Death...no such confusion.....every person on the planet knows how they would wish to die. How we hope others might end their days........

keep yer wretched ideas t' yourself.........

I dunno, if it was just a bird I wouldn't really care about it, probably just ignore it

As for humans, yeah I agree with assisted suicide, or I don't think people should be prosecuted and jailed for it anyway

Yeah, assisted suicide is a great idea imo. I personally, should I start to slip away mentally or physically in my old age, plan to kill myself.

Kinda relevant, Jack Kevorkian just died last year

But, yeah, it would depend on the situation for me ...

Did you do a lung/heart shot or something? Most of my family will do that, I don't know how they can.

I won't shoot unless I can get a solid head shot

Damn, am I the only heartless bastard here?

Shooting a buck in the lungs and watch it feebly attempt to walk slowly away before collapsing.

Im all for mercy killing, of all animals, be they 4 footed or two.

My mood dropped significantly after reading this thread.

Everyone should have the right to terminate their own life, but I would have trouble making the decision if they didn't have the ability to make the decision themselves.

Two shots. First hit the back end, second behind the ear to put it down. Absolutely the worst feeling ever, but delicious. I have butchered tons of meat.

Lung/heart shot is too gruesome for me. I'm too much of an animal lover to hurt anything, unless I'm hunting and it's a headshot and I am out of venison or something.

Ah, okay. That's understandable. Right now my dad is showing me how to tan hides ... waiting on one to dry (salted down, pretty much dry right now), going to scrape the dried membrane out of another tomorrow. With fur. I plan to sew a bunch together to make a fleece-lined (or some other soft fabric) deer blanket, maybe with a layer of wool in the middle.

Going to learn the native smoke-tanning process

If I ever went blind or became paralyzed, I would want my family to kill me.

Just my two cents

I'm for assisted suicide... if somebody doesn't want to live anymore, it's cruel to prolong their life for trivial moral reasons. On the other hand, if somebody has had an illness or accident, is still alive but has no chance of recovery, then it would be up to the family really. I have no problem with putting something out of it's misery if it's suffering and beyond help, I'd just rather that, whatever it was, wasn't suffering anymore. Whenever I accidentally run over a Rabbit or Pheasant in my car, to look in my mirror and see it's still moving/alive, I always feel like a complete and utter bastard.

Off topic: If I ever lost my hearing, I would terminate my own life. Life without music isn't worth living.

I'm a firm believer that if you're gonna eat meat then you need to hunt, kill and butcher something at least once. Because I know that when a menu is handed to me something, somewhere is gonna die.

I once had to take out a cat before. It was in my friends run down barn and I thought I could kill it the fastest using a hatchet I found in there, it was a bloody mess.

Don't know about a loved one though...
