To clarify

Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик....= Cyrilic alphabet
Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik......= Latin transcription
Union Soviet Socialist Republics..............................= English translation

Now if I remember correctly....the USSR/CCCP...was created in late 1922 from a merger between several soviet republics in the area to create a federation. The new name was the CCCP, or as it translates in English (and nicely also in Dutch) the USSR.

In French...it would translate to URSS (Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques).

In German it would translate to UdSSR (Union der Sozialistischen Sowjetrepubliken,)

Now...important to note is that preceeding the USSR there were four republics that eventually merged in 1922. These were:

Українська Радянська Соціалістична Республіка ....Or in cyrilic abreviation: YRCP
The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.....which is often mistakenly shortened to USSR....instead of the proper Ukrain SSR

Закавказская Советская Федеративная Социалистическая Республика.....Or in cyrilic abreviation: ЗCФCP
Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. TSFSR for short.

Российская Советская Федеративная Социалистическая Республик....Or in Cyrilic abreviation: PCФCR
Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic....RSFSR in short (basically what we could call Soviet Russia)

and last but not least:

Беларуская Савецкая Сацыялістычная Рэспубліка......Or in Cyrilic abreviation: БCCP
ByeloRussian Soviet Socialist Republic. Or....BSSR for short.

Those four merged in December 1922 into the CCCP....or USSR....or UdSSR or URSS

I was posting at the same time as you. 'C' is a cyrillic 'S'. So it's S. S. S. R.

Or something like 'say say say air'.

Here's something I've always wanted to know, why do they have the accents above the letters? They are never there in handwritten form or even the cyrillic computer script, in fact the only place I've seen them is on Wikipedia. Why?

The Transcaucasion Federal republic was a brief union of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. When I was a kid, I had stamps that they printed.

It's to denote the proper pronunciation for non-native Russian speakers. The accents are also used in books for little children.
