Attempting to take over states in the USA has been an occassional pastime of extremist nerdarios of various stripes. White supremacists have had an idea for a while of trying to take over the general pacific northwest area (eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana etc) as a "white homeland". Libertarians have the "Free State Project", a movement that tries to get thousands of libertarian activists to move to New Hampshire, in order to try and dominate the political process there and make it a bastion of free market libertarianism.

This got me thinking, I think that leftist wingnuts ought to take over a state. I vote Vermont. There are already a bunch of wingnuts and hippies up there, plus they have a lot of guns.

Eastern Washington is different from Western Washington, from my experience. More conservative. The area around Spokane has had kind of a right-wing wingnut presence over the past couple decades, with robberies and a couple bombs and such. The latest incident was last year, actually, someone put a nail bomb along an MLK day parade route. And of course you had the Aryan Nations in Idaho and assorted white supremacists, "patriot movement" and militia nuts in Montana.

Anyway, having driven through Montana over the past day from east to west, I can say without a doubt that it's one of the most beautiful states in the USA. Man. Some of the landscapes are gorgeous. That whole region (rural Idaho, Montana, Wyoming etc) is a really interesting region, far far more interesting than other interstate corridors (such as the mostly boring I-95). There are old decaying abandoned farm houses all over that area, I always wonder the history behind those buildings, as well as what it most be like to live in some of the tiny towns in that area. Plus there are a bunch of little cultural oddities, like pro-life & anti-meth billboards and kitschy roadside attractions like "Wall Drug" (in South Dakota).
