Hey comrades. I've been searching for a while now for some good Communist fiction. I guess that might be difficult, but maybe some books that have strong pro-socialist undertones?
What about movies? Any fictional movies that fit the bill?

I don't really read fiction, but I've heard that Looking Backward is good. I haven't got a chance to read it myself yet.

Try anything written by China Mieville, seriously surreal fantasy with strong socialist undertones. Excellently written

The lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver is also very good, definately trotskyist but its well enough written that any lefty should enjoy it.

Cory Doctorow is good if you can get your head around the technology references plus there's the bonus that you can download his stuff free from his website.

And of course for a more anarchist slant you must read the dispossessed by Ursula leGuin. Hard work but well worth the effort

If you haven't seen it there is a movie named "Reds", its about a american author who goes to Russia during the revolution and he eventually converts to communism and makes the communist labor party. Its a really good movie.

And it's not revisionist?

What kind of Communist? What kind of fiction?

Jack London has used many (what can be interpreted as) socialist themes. Not sure if that qualifies with what you're looking for. Actually, many American authors have used socialistic themes.

Concerning fictional films, I actually enjoyed the satire Good Bye, Lenin! It may not contain the socialist undertones to which you were referring, but It definitely displays the early "Ostalgie" felt by some Germans during the fall of the DDR. It focuses on one family's struggle to adjust to the capitalist counter-revolution in Germany. I liked it. Below is a review from the Committee for a Workers' International.

I recommend Grapes of Wrath. It's not a socialist book per se, but it does have some nice undertones and emphasizes the value of honest labor and criticizes those out of touch with reality such as priests. John Steinbeck has been accused of being a communist, but I don't think that's true. He just seems to have sympathy for the working class. In addition, it's just a good book.

Among the classics of socialist fiction are The Iron Heel by Jack London, Mother by Maxim Gorky, Family by Pa Chin, Crab Canning Ship by Takiji Kobayashi, The Jungle, Oil!, The Coal Wars by Upton Sinclair.

Almost all of B.Traven's novels have socialist themes, especially The Death Ship and Rebellion of the Hanged. Chester Himes' If He Hollers Let Him Go and In Dubious Battle treat race from socialist perspective.

Send My Love and a Molotov Cocktail is a terrific recent anthology edited by Gary Philips.
