View Full Version : y'know people complain about "hipsters" re: political activity?

at least it's something i've encountered: "x organisation is full of hipsters who just judge you" and so on

i genuinely feel like i'm judged any time i've got involved in anarchist/left-wing orgs/politics precisely because i take an interest in "fashion" (which essentially means that i wear clothes that match)

like: "you dress in x y z so you must be a judgemental arsehole!"

i feel more judged for supposedly being part of an apparently judgmental sub-culture than anything else

anyone have similar experiences?

When I was punk cool anarchists didn't want me for their organisaiton because they were above subculture. But then I kicked their stupid asses in discussion... so I was like omg you are smart... and I was like... lick my boots jackass..

people who don't care about fashion judge people for being too into fashion, and people that are into fashion judge those who are not. both are equally bad when it comes to it.

though there's a larger subsection among fashionable indie rock types that have convinced themselves that they are accepting and non-judgmental while the opposite is actually true. which is annoying.

hipster is one of those words that people use to describe anything they don't like. sort of like 'unconstitutional' in the united states.

I am thankful that the hipster has replaced the punk as the default subculture for radical politics though. Hipsters are at least somewhat less alienating.

I usually expect well-dressed people to be dicks, but I don't act like a dick to them unless they act like a dick first.

It's just personal experience.

And even though most of my clothes are old, torn, and/or faded ... I match clothes to a degree. One of my ex-girlfriends went out and bought me some armani exchange stuff, so sometimes I wear nice clothes. And when I do go raid Marshall's (about once a year) I usually go for what I perceive as "fashionable" (and I can dress myself well if I try) ... I guess to compensate for the fact that I'm broke as hell.

I guess I'm a hypocrite ... but only sometimes.

just buy clothes secondhand
befriend someone who works at a hipster thrift store so you can learn when they hit up the local actual thrift stores for clothes. Then you can intercept them.

I don't know of any hipster thrift stores. Unless you're talking about places like plato's closet.
I went in one of those once to sell some clothes. They were pricks.

Thrift stores have good shit sometimes. Especially good deals on furniture.

Are you being a dick on purpose or is it unintentional?

selling clothes is the worst experience ever. I'm not sure if it's even possible for clerks to be nice about it.
Dude I was at the value village and they were selling a crate of mixed lego for two bucks. That's a deal right there.

Oh, sorry. I thought you were mocking me somehow. It's hard to tell on the internet sometimes.

Yeah, they seriously are. They turned away most of it and said "I cant sell this nobody will buy it. It's not fashionable." The only things they bought, a couple of pairs of cargo shorts that were too big on me, they gave me a total of about $4.

And, seriously dude, I would have been all over those fucking legos. One thing I always do is comb the books and go through the dishware sections. I got an iron skillet for $3.00 at Goodwill. I also carry a soda in with me, and if I find something that looks like tarnished silver, if you dab some soda on your finger and rub the product it will polish if it's silver. Then I'll call someone to get them to look it up for me, and if it's worth a bunch more than what Goodwill's selling it for, I grab that shit and ebay it. I got $80 for a silver platter that I paid $9.00 for at goodwill once. My mom paid around $35.00 for some tea set that she ended up selling for around $500.00 on ebay.

I need to go find some secondhand book shops. I haven't been to any flea markets since I was a little kid, though. When I was 8-9 I remember going to some in Louisiana and Mississippi and my parents would get me bootleg VHS tapes of kids movies. I haven't even seen any flea markets in a couple of years.

Well, actually, I went to one like 4 years ago. In South Carolina. I got a carton of cigarettes (Marlboro Reds) for $15. That was the whole reason we went, my friend that lived there at the time needed cigarettes and said they had cheap cartons. I needed cigarettes, too. I don't remember much else of what they had there ... just a few bongs and some trinkets. I think there were some clothes. But my whole intention of going to SC was to party, so I just stocked up on cigarettes and got the fuck out.

I'm glad I don't smoke anymore.

But naw man if there's something you need it's at a flea market. Computer parts are solid for pocket money, cigarettes are basically currency, and, uh, there's a lot of bongs.
A LOT.

But careful though it's not like goodwill. A lot of sellers actually have an idea what they're selling, so it's a little harder to find undervalued items.

Yeah we did but I really didn't care myself and thought it was stupid. Oh cool you have red laces and a University of Nebraska hat on. I was probably the most plain looking gangster of all time . I thought it was actually funny that our enemies dressed eerily similar to us.
