OK, not really but I'll go for it none the less. Fast approaching is the opening day of the glorious sport of the people! Already spring training has begun and the sweet smell of freshly cut grass is in the air. I have read that most if not all hostilities around the world will cease for the duration of the pre, regular and post-season(its on the internet so you know it's true). Already talks are under way to have the peoples sport extended year round and globally(this I'm actually not kidding about). So please thread on about your memories and thoughts of baseball, its stadiums, this season and of course the Red Army of baseball the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers. Submitted for your approval.

This Is the tiger's year I've been waiting and hopeing since the 2006 run. I've always loved baseball but I don't believe many people outside of America follow it very closely.

Why do you guys call it the "World Series"? It's not like anyone but the USA plays it.

Sad but true. There are leagues that are looked at in Ireland, Australia, the Middle East(american military bases I assume), and parts of the Russian Federation by major league scouts. Of course baseball is huge in much of Asia, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Your man Sparky Anderson was a helluva manager of the game!

Actually as I wrote earlier baseball is huge in lots of countries. The Caribbean and Japan have very competitive leagues. As for the term World Series Canadian teams also play. Tried to have it as an Olympic game but it didn't catch. Now there is The World Baseball Classic. A better representation of world talent. I don't think the US has won it all in this forum yet.

My team, as usual, are probably going to have a bad season. It's tough being in the UK and trying to keep up with the unsociable hours of baseball by GMT - it's doubly tough when your team is the Mets.

I know it's obvious to say, but trying to come back from a long losing streak is going to be harder now we've lost Reyes. Not holding up much hope for the season, though it would be nice to sock it to the Braves for a change.

Well, the first question that comes to mind is what is your caffeinated beverage of choice while watching baseball?

Prometeo liberado

Don't drink caffeine. Afternoon game, lemonade. Night game, hot chocolate.

I'm going to try and catch some minor league games, too. I haven't been to one in several years.

Don't forget the dutch, almost no one here (including me) cares one bit about baseball yet the dutch team are the reigning actual world champions...
Seems that the dutch for such a small shit country are starting to dominate in more than our traditional strongholds like iceskating.
Kickboxing & darts we already have sown up.

psycho you must be kidding! Reigning world champs of the World Baseball classic? I gotta look into this. It is a hard game to get into though. Doesn't come across on t.v. at all. The sounds, the smell of grass, wee ones overdoing it on soda and candy, PEANUTS!!! Dutch? Really? Hmmm...

ok so I was always pretty dismissive towards US sports but after giving it a try I got interested in american football towards the end of this last seasons so I'm thinking I can give baseball a try. so what time are the games normally on and being in the uk how can I watch them? also stupid question but how long does a game normally go on for?

Why do you guys call it the "World Series"? It's not like anyone but the USA plays it.I call it that because that what some owners and ad-men decided to call it that. Why did they call it that? Hubris and advertising hype probably.

It's more of a world series now though since US Baseball leagues farm players from the Caribbean. Now it's at least the North American series!

how long does a game normally go on for?Usually too long. Baseball at it's best isn't thrilling like Football or Futbol ;) or Basketball, it's a suspenseful slow-burn of a game with an occasional burst of excitement.

I really love going to baseball games every once in a while but I rarely watch it on TV or keep up on it. It takes a level of patience I just don't have. But going to a game, talking shit with friends, enjoying the experience of the crowd (better at football games though), and seeing a double-play or a couple of intense innings is a fantastic experience. Fun for old or young and anyone on a mellow LSD trip (aside from the nationalistic crap thrown on top of all US sports leagues).

OK, the dutch did win it all in the 2011 WBC. And they actually have a baseball tradition going back to 1922. Also the Dutch Antilles are supposed to field some pretty monster teams.

Ouch, a Mets fan.

Yeah I wouldn't be too excited if I were you either. You lost Reyes, your staff is banking on a nice return from Johan, you had to pull the fences in... ugh. The only real bright side is Ike Davis and David Wright, and Johan if he remotely returns to form but still... it's not looking too hot.

I always laugh when I see "WORLD CHAMPIONS" when a team wins a competition that only the USA and Canada are in

My dad is a big mariners fan (poor guy), and I'm kind of a half-assed Red Sox fan, so every season he takes me to a mariners/red sox game. it's fun. baseball is probably the only sport I've ever been interested in

Hey now, we almost did good in both 1995 (okay, fine it was a wildcard, fuck off) and 2001. That's two almost good seasons.

The WBC is a sham tournament run by a Zionist cabal. Anyone who is 1/4 Jew is allowed to play for Team Israel. Doesn't sound fair.

Oh, and Go Blue Jays. :D As for the World Series, nobody really played baseball outside of the U.S. back when the name was coined.

How dare you! You gotta concentrate on what the pitcher is trying to do and it all flows from there.

Gotcha on your thread earlier. It is B.S. what they are doing, but on the same note I ran into an ex-Dodger Shawn Green who has been retired for some time and he told me that he may play for Israel. With that kind of washed up talent I doubt they will be a factor.
Blue Jays, whats wrong with you?:tt2:

What would you baseball fans say is the main attraction to watching it? I've never liked it. I went to see a few MLB and MiLB teams play with friends who had tickets and I guess it was pretty cool cause the grass is so green down on the field and there's beer in public and fan brawls sometimes.

For me, so much of it has to do with a connection that exists from having played it while a kid. As a wee boy it was all I could think about, the glove, the ball, the smell of the grass. All while you are "playing" with your new friends. People get paid large sums of money to do what many of us would do for free. Then you ave the intra game strategizing and the art of the pitch, the sounds, the flavors and smells. Forget about it!
