First of all spoiler alert obviously

Children Of Men - the whole movie and way it was filmed was really realistic. I saw this movie with my former partner while knowing nothing about it except for the title.

Opening scene

Probably one of my favorite scenes, especially the end of this 2nd clip here

I watched Children of Men about a month ago. I really liked it, except like all good movies I wished it had gone for longer and not ended so soon. At first I thought it would be lame but I agree: it was one of the most relistic movies I've ever seen.

My favourite movie is Tae Guk Gi (Brotherhood of War) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taegukgi_%28film%29). It was so realistic, packed with sorrow and tragedy. It was not biased toward the North Koreans and portrayed the Korean Conflict in all its carnage. It is the only movie I can remember where I cried at the end.

Children of Men was pretty good

I don't really have one single favorite movie, but here's clips from a few of my favorites:

This is the trailer, because the scenes out of context are kind of odd. Neil Young's original soundtrack really fits this movie. It's incredible.
Dead Man, 1995
07xKQakj1hM

Forrest Whitaker plays an animal-loving, hit-man squatter who's obsessed with living by the code of the samurai. RZA makes a cameo and composed some of the music.
Ghost Dog, 1999
iFMY4jJ6SVE

Here's the first ten minutes of Marc Singer's documentary Dark Days. He lived with a group of homeless people in Manhattan in an old Amtrak tunnel, who've built their own shacks and tapped into the electrical grid. Proceeds from the movie (and the movie itself) were used to acquire housing vouchers for the people. Original music by DJ Shadow.

I always liked the scene in Утомлённые солнцем (I know, I know, very anti-Soviet movie) when the girl is running through the field and the Stalin balloon goes up with the dramatic music. :D

Fucking brilliant scene from Natural Born Killers

It seems like something Douglas Sirk would've done if only he could've gotten away with it

Another awesome scene from the Japanese movie Pigs and Battleships directed by Shohei Imamura.

Just to provide context for the scene, (SPOILER) Kinta, the young boy with the gun, had been working for a yakuza gang that raised pigs. The scene takes place at the end of the movie when two rival gangs are conducting a business transaction of the pigs while Kinta threatens to fuck the whole thing up after he decides he no longer wants to be a part of the gang.

It's a great example of effective satire. Countless yakuza members end up dead after being trampled by the slow-moving pigs, in spite of the fact that they could have easily either outrun, outmaneuvered, or just killed them. Their own desire for wealth literally killed them because they couldn't even think of the possibility of abandoning their property.

This is a sweet sequence from Man With a Movie Camera. Probably my favorite movie ever and really hard to pick out one particular spot, but the part beginning around the 4:57 mark is one of my favorites.

I'm not an enormous fan of Kurosawa -- largely due to his humanism and sexism -- but nonetheless, just from an aesthetic/formal standpoint, this scene is amazing

This movie's a straight up mindfuck and has some of the best cinematography I've seen. Pretty much the Citizen Kane of Japanese cyberpunk. It's not hard to believe that this was a huge influence on Aronofsky when making Pi

While the writing for this movie is nothing short of terrible (Fritz Lang actually tried very hard to distance himself from it for the rest of his career), there are a few scenes I really love. Plus, the technical innovations can't be discounted. This movie is very much a product of a member of the bourgeois flirting with socialism, but still holding onto a great deal of romanticism. It's also worth noting that much (the majority, actually) of the writing was done by Lang's then-wife Thea Von Harbeua who would later become an ardent supporter of the Nazis (Lang divorced her and fled to America in 1932).

The scene beginning at :51 and the one immediately following are two of my favorites

This is a great scene from Dog Day Afternoon. I guess my one major criticism of the movie in general is its effectiveness as melodrama is somewhat undercut by the realism of Pacino's performance. Anyway, awesome scene and great movie

Oh yeah, just to provide context, Pacino's character (Sonny) is in the middle of a bank robbery and, as part of his negotiations with the cops, had some pizzas delivered for him and the bank workers.

Brotherhood of War is not biased toward North Koreans??

What?

It is,its horrible,and too reactionary.Its disgusting.

While the ROK soldiers are some 'tough' macho soldiers, the KPA soldiers are portrayed like cattle, just runing at the enemy, and dying. They are shown like sub-human beings, they are portrayed as cowards/fanatics/crazed people/idiots.

That movie is like one the many Western movies about WW2.
Because, all that is important in WW2 is that the 'stupid drunk Russians' only know to shout URAAA and charge at German tanks and die in huge numbers, while big old commisars shout "RAGGHH NO RETREAT WE SHOOOT YOU" .
And of course, the 'stupid commies' spend their free time by drinking Vodka and being drunk.Noooo, they didnt have babies at home, young woman, old partents, noooo their families were not slaughtered by the Hitlerites and children drowned in petrol and blood!Nooooo, all is well, all the 'stupid commies' need is VODKA and some songs, they are stupid,no emotions.

Are they writing letters to their families back thousands of miles behind the front,Nooooo? They are drinking until they puke,or they are dancing to "Kalinka"!

How did the Soviet commanders win battles?By genius tactics and the bravery of their men??NOOOO!They wont it by suacide charging the Nazi tanks!Hahahah! That's right! The stupid commies.
Disgusting,disgusting and once again,disgusting.

This, in my opinion, is the best scene in Land and Freedom which is pretty much my favourite communism-related film.

But I'm going to have to be cliche and say my favourite movie and scene is the ecstacy of gold in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Ennio Morricone .

ENEMY AT THE GATES seemed to be an accurate portrayal of both the good and the bad within the Soviet Army.

What?

Enemy at the Gates is one disgusting piece of anti-communist garbage.

I remember one scene: Nikita (yes, him) visits Stalingrad, and makes a visit to the commisars, and than he says something like:"I want our boys to stop pissing their pants whenever they see a German!" And one of the commisars shakes like a stick in a wind?

Meanwhile - More Soviet soldiers are killed by their own comrades than the Germans.

Its an individualistic piece of rotten grabage.

One sniper was a hero, and the millions who died were what?Cowards?

The movie is idiotic beyond every line.

Enemy at the Gates also tells the story of how Khrushchev and the military commanders used the heroics of Lev Zaitsev to inspire the Soviet Army too prevail against the Germans in Stalingrad. Granted there are serious historical inaccuracies, for example it neglects to include in its narrative the Soviet offensive that trapped the German Sixth Army. On balance, though, it at least acknowledges that the Russians heroically defended Stalingrad, a step forward for Hollywood since anti-communism was institutionalized there back in the 1950s.

First I'd like to thank Mari3L for mentioning Children of Man. I've really liked that movie but I've forgot it's name...

Ghost Dog is also briliant movie.

When it comes to Tae Guk Gi Omsk's comment is innacurate. That movie did tried to show both North and South as simillar, because that movie is part of wave of Korean naitonalist movies which tend to proclaime unity of both Korea's: we are all Koreans and that is only what matters. Such movies are JSA: Joint Security Area (2000), The Front Line (2011) and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005). If you really want to watch movie from only South Korean perspective you should check Crossing (2008), which is propaganda movie for South Korea! Tae Guk Gi has many holes (so to speek) but is really good movie. Of course, problem is its nationalist perspective, but it tried to show Korean War from perspective which is almost forbiden in South Korea. For example, there was a scene where South Korean "police" shoot "communists". There were a lot of such incidents during war and South Korean government denies them. Personally, I find other 3 movies I've mentioned quite better.

Now, my favorite movie is Kurosawa's Ran. I like whole movie because the way it was shoot, because of colours, because of acting etc.

My favorite scene is when wife of first brother attacks second brother, thretens him and then cuts his neck with tanato, licks his blood and they have sex. I don't like this scene because of sex part or anything like that, but because of actress, because of women, who is really in control of situation, because of her madness, her anger and her hate... which are so fucking good presented... her passion also - passion for destruction and revange.

Here's my little list of my favorite movies (I'm still working on it): http://www.imdb.com/list/gDP_Z4N_sHg/

My favourite Kurosawa scene comes from Seven Samurai when two Samurai duel. It's technically brilliant, depicting two opposing forces clashing horizontally with a vertical action drawing it to a close. Of course, when I think about it, it represents the traditional heirarchy defeating upstarts who want to have power themselves... :bored:

Искра
25th February 2012, 12:52
Well, even Kurosawa is tehnically reactionary Japanese nationalist, I like his art... and enjoy in it. He is a master of camera and story. Also, a lot of his work is influenced by Russian realism which I like. So, I kind of don't care much about ideological aspect of his movies.

Omsk, I dont think that its a to good idea to over analysis all movies out of a left perspective. Because, in that case, you cant watch anything. And i doubt many ppl watch movies for historically accurat facts, at least i hope soo.

Well you can do that, and I don't see any problem with that, but if you want to make analysis at least try to make it accurate and try to research certain director, his agenda, his politics and certain trends in cinematography.

Ok my point was more liek, that if you analyse evry film out of a socialist perspective and by that choose if its a good one or not, i see a problem. Now im talking about if youre rejecting any other criteria such as acting skills and story line and special effects and just focus on "Is this left or not?".

For example i dindt like the movie 'Doubt' so much, since its not really my coup of tea. But i cant denie that the acting is in top quality and that the personal portrait is well done.

Yeah, I agree.

Work of art is work of art, even if it represents reactionary political ideology it can be really good. After all, most of "leftist" art stuff, such as music or movies, are not so good (at least from my experience).

A favorite movie of mine is Rebel Without a Cause (1955, Nicholas Ray director,) and a favorite scene is where Jimmy (James Dean) and Judy (Natalie Wood) reach out to each other across the chasm of the CinemaScope screen.

Natalie Wood is also in another favorite movie, The Searchers (1956, John Ford director) where Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) grabs hold of Debbie (Natalie Wood) preparatory to murdering her and then has a change of heart and clasps her in his arms while uttering "Let's go home Debbie."

There's a terrific book on the subject edited by Chris Fujiwara, Defining Moments in the Movies (2007.)
