Aside from being my favourite author he was a revolutionary in his own way, it's hard to believe it's been 7 years today. One of the greatest minds of all time if you ask me :D

I love him (。✿‿✿。)
You must know this, but I've heard he had a big picture of Che in his house and said something along the lines of "Marx was right".

One of the only writters that could make ed meese out to be funny. Generation of Swine pretty much sums up the 80's in the sickest, funniest ways I've ever read.

It's absolutely frightening how he foresaw the invasion of Iraq less than a year after 9/11.

I cant stand him. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is seriously the single dumbest book I have ever read in my life (ralph steadmans art is pretty great, tho). I dont get the appeal at all. Also, there is nothing worse than Hunter S. Thompson fanboys.

Each to his own I guess, but what aspects of Fear and Loathing make you think it's the dumbest book ever?

His campaign for sheriff was utterly awesome. Completely anti-business. And yes, he himself came to despise capitalism, though I don't know if he ever read Marx. Probably did, and liked it.

I read it when I was sixteen, which was eight years ago, so I dont really remember it very well. I just remember thinking how excruciatingly dumb it was, and how completely overrated and untalented Hunter S. Thompson was.

the only thing I have to go by when talking about Hunter S. Thompson is seeing the movie Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
now that is a seriously boring movie. I laughed wicked hard at the bat country line in the very beginning, and then I barely smiled throughout the rest of it. it's literally just watching two guys take drugs. that is basically the plot. and even then, it still manages to be a very slow moving plot.

This was how the book was.

I personally prefer his non fiction. Have you ever read "Better Than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie"?

And that's just it, there's a lot more to Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas than ''two guys taking drugs''. A key part of the plot was coming to terms with the end of the Hippie culture of the 60's and the Summer Of Love along with the sleaze and tackiness of Las Vegas itself

Anyone who judges Hunter S. Thompson's writings based purely on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a fucking moron. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is an incredible analysis of bourgeois elections and how it is literally just a show. Thompson writes not only with the passion of the 60's, but also with the stark realization that the "love and drugs" generation was not going to lead to the emancipation of humanity. His writings reflect that in a sick, unique way. He's one of my favorite writers. Buy the ticket and take the fucking ride.

Maybe, but I hated that book so much that there is absolutely no chance in hell that I will ever even attempt anything else hes written. Guy just seems like a pompous jerk.

I like how he took a bunch of drugs and supposedly beat John Belushi in a contest to see who could snort the most cocaine in a sitting. He was a hardcore homophobe, though, that's not good. I think that his writing is somewhat overrated as well.
