I know I wasn't old enough to appreciate Bill Hicks in his hey-day, but I've recently started listening/watching his stand up, and I can't get enough of it! Smart, witty, offensive, anti-religious, and just plain hilarious. What do you all think of Bill Hicks?

I don't really listen to him so much any more, but I did when I was younger (14ish), he probably influenced me a lot back then actually

Errm, I think he was smart, witty, offensive, anti-religious, and hilarious. Add twisted, savage, cynical, alienated, indignant and yet undefeated.
I think he was pretty fearless as a performer, and he doesn't seem to have been a hypocrite (which, given that every other person you've ever heard of seems to be, is pretty special).
So, yes, a fan. Because I like laughing and thinking at the same time as I'm being outraged.

Read a biography about him. Can't remember what it was called but it was like the first one written. It gives a totally different impression of him that I had when I was growing up and listening to his records. He was totally into transcendental mediation and all sorts of weird new age stuff.

You better not be about to destroy my mental construction of Bill Hicks

Anyone who can throw a "suck your own cock" joke and a scathing rant on religion, within the span of 5 minutes has my respect. My favorite quote by Hicks would have to be "Someone once yelled at me during a show 'we don't come to comedy shows to think,' so I responded with 'well where do you go to think, I want to go there!'

I'm not sure how factual it is to be honest but it was filled with stuff like new age worship. I think it mentioned that Bill went on some new age trip to help cure his cancer by opening up his shakras or something strange. But, you can actually piece together this from listening to his gigs especially when he gets all metaphysical and talking about spirituality. It also said that he really believed in UFOs. I can't remember the exact details but I remember that it totally destroyed the perception of Hicks that I had.

A funny guy, but a bit strange politically. A bit of a conspiracy dingbat. He criticized contemporaries like Leno for taking part in the "capitalist gangbang" of advertising, and referred to Thatcher's Britain as a "socialist nightmare".

Bill Hicks was a funny guy with a social conscience and some degree of elevated political consciousness.

Just watching a video of him now. Died way too soon, in my opinion.
