View Full Version : Death Metal versus Black Metal

Which do you prefer if you're a fan of either genre and why?
I prefer death metal because I grew up listening to it and I find it a lot more technical and feel that it sounds better compared to black metal. Also death metal tends to be more left as I've found out, compared to black metal which is tends to be filled with even more hate, racism and satanism than death metal, btw I'm drunk typing this so I dont know how it sounds yet.

I don't feel it needs to be one choice over the other. Also, this:

Black metal is apolitical. There are as much as left wing as right wing black metal bands. I like it more than death metal, because it's more raw, emotional and honest than death metal (of course, it become shit pose now... but watever...). But in the end I agree with Sam_b and I personally care more about bands than about genre. If band is good to me I don't care if they play k-pop or grindcore.

If I had to choose, then I'd choose death metal, easily:

1) more intense and engaging in brutal-super-fast parts

2) more technical (in a way I consider enjoyable; there's also technicality for its own sake, especially in contemporary DM, which I despise and find unlistenable)

3) more amenable to variation, in both tempo/rhythmic patterns and influences from other genres

I don't actively listen to either but if I hear black metal I can like it sometimes, whereas I dislike death metal.

I like a lot of what I've heard from both genres. One thing I can't stand though are the really low, guttural, "cookie monster" vocals common in death metal. I enjoy them when used very sparingly, I even use them every once in a while. It becomes really annoying though when it's basically the only vocal style used by a lot of bands. It's not even the lack of lyrical decipherability (?) that annoys me, it's just that there's pretty much no tonal variation at all. It gets really monotonous. That's why when I listen to bands like Suffocation, I don't even pay attention to the vocals.

Anyway, what about Option E: Sludge

I found death metal easier to get into. The instrumental harmony was more aesthetically pleasing to me, whereas I had to learn to appreciate black metal. But at this point, I'd say I appreciate black metal more. I think there's a lot more good black metal than death.

Option F: Post-Metal, imo the best metal genre but isn't mutually excluding of other genres.

Grenzer
20th February 2012, 03:33
I fucking love metal. Never heard of Post-Metal though. As with all genres of music, there are things that suck; but when Metal is good, it's epic.

yeah but at least with BM the shrieked vocals are interesting to listen to, and the vocals can go back and forth from shrieked vocals and kind of weird creepy talking vocals. death grunts just sound kinda unenergetic and dull imo.

Black Metal because it suits the sort of attitude/emotion I like to hear in metal more than death metal and has more of an artistic sound to my ears. I hate to be one of those annoying self-promoters, but I have some black metal recordings on the revleft musicians sticky thread if you wanna check them out. Is it wrong that I have a fascist anti-cosmic satanist (with no concern for race) as my only real fan? :crying:

As for death metal generally being more left than black metal which is typically fascist music, it doesn't get more left wing than this with black metal:

I'd have thought playing communist black metal live would be a death wish... anyone double dare me to forward this video onto him?

EDIT: Just found this and it made me laugh, but I'm confused about 0:50 ("no subculture hatred" written on an anti-antifa symbol...) and 1:00 (an anti-red skinhead being targeted?):

I personally prefer black metal. Aside from the "true norwegian kvlt" black metal, I feel the genre is more experimental and flexible. I listen to everything from Immortal to Gnaw their Tongues

I used to be huge on technical death metal, but I just like the raw emotion that emits from black metal more. This is probably also the reason I gravitated more towards hardcore and punk music as I grew older. I used to be a metalhead through and through, but just fast riffing and technicality just doesn't do it for me anymore, I need the sloppiness and primal riffs black metal, punk, hardcore and sludge music provides. I still have a soft spot in my heart for death metal and power metal, but I just can't take it as seriously as I used to.

No no no, the term is "nationalist". He's said the only two things that separate him from the Nazis are that he's not a socialist or a nationalist, but also says he believes in racial segregation. Makes sense lol. Gaahl (Gorgoroth, now in some other band) is also racist, he called blacks animals or something like that according to Wikpedia. Nargaroth aren't exactly famous, but one of my favourites, and the singer said the music is made "by the white man for the white man" or some stupid crap like that. Then there's another unheard of band, Peste Noire, whose frontman is a strong French nationalist. I guess I just run into the wrong bands...

The lack of vocal variation is what forces death metal to be more technical. If the guitars don't stand as a complete musical entity on their own, you're fucking sunk.

A lot of DM bands with talented vocalists include more and more clean vocals as time goes on, and their guitars get worse and worse. The vocalist wants to grow and protect his/her voicebox, and it leads to this situation.

Cannibal Corpse are the perfect example of of this lol. George Corpsegrinder's vocals aren't as guttural as Chris Barnes' which changed in time with their style going more technical from just powerchords and tremolo picking.

I haven't come across too much death metal that is politically motivated. There are some black metal bands that I think are. Wolves in the Throne Room come to mind. Here is a link to a facebook page that I discovered a while back. It is a lot of crust-punky black metal.

The general question is a toss up for me. I can just as easily enjoy Opeth or Cannibal Corpse just as well as I can Cof, Dimmu, Burzum. However, name-call if you'd like, but I typically enjoy black metal that has good production value. For instance, old Gorgoroth or Behemoth are a lot more difficult to listen to than their newer stuff. Emperor doesn't have the most production, but they make it sound good. Of course, Ihsahn is a genius. Have you heard his other stuff?

In any case, I guess I like them about the same. It just depends.

Not too keen on a lot of these new bands. Asking Alexandria, Devil Wears Prada, etc. They all sound the same, and their shirts all look like the same colorful bloody diarrhea vomit with scratchy, "brutal" looking logos. Give me a break.

Yeah, I know vocals in death metal tend to serve as more of a textural instrument than a melodic/harmonic/rhythmic one, but it's just that that texture gets really monotonous when there's so little variation in it.

And as far as vocal variation hindering overall complexity, what about Mr. Bungle? While they're not strictly death metal, they make some of the most technically complex music I've ever heard, and Mike Patton is probably the single most talented vocalist ever when it comes to stylistic variation. (Another one of Patton's bands, Fantomas, is probably closer to qualifying as death metal)

So you find Satanism negative along the lines of hatred and racism, yet your avatar is a pentagram with the head of Baphomet with ''Leviathan'' around the ring. That is the most Satanic symbol there is, apart from LaVey himself.

I like both, but I also prefer Death Metal (plain, Technical, Melodic, Old School, Symphonic, 's'all good), not for political meaning, but for the sound. It's quite relaxing. People think I'm odd for falling asleep to it.
