What a fucking ****. I hate how so many Americans who tend to have failed years of Spanish class and come out of high school only speaking English, tend to portray learning English as some easy task for immigrants. It's difficult - very difficult from what I've heard.

fucking bullshit
anyways yes, idk if you guys know but white americans are pretty flustered and frustrated by mexicans[1]. this lady fucked up and has been properly disciplined imo. i hope she learned that being under stress is no excuse for being racist.
the dude w/oversite otoh is a fucking moron "Under the circumstances when taken in the context of the moment and the lack of intent for 'Go back to Mexico' to be a racially or nationality-based pejorative remark, I find it was not a remark of an egregious nature."
[1] - of course this shit going down in texas which has historically gone between being forced to negotiate its own identity as a mexican-majority state and committing straight up genocide on mexicans via the texas rangers makes it complicated, but i believe basically the lady was legitimately not thinking and if she has shown a regretful attitude towards the incident, which she seems to, then her suspension serves a fine disciplinary purpose.

How can this situation be considered "stressful"? Making a racist remark to a student like that isn't acceptable. Full stop. Education in English is already difficult enough when you can't speak it fluently, without the racist teachers.

sexism is also hard enough on women without calling women who upset us ****s.
and no one is saying it's acceptable, except for that one fuckhead with oversight.

This incident apparently took place on 30 September. If the kid had absolutely no understanding of the English language, what was he doing with an English-speaking teacher for the entire first month of the school year? I think he understood perfectly well and was just being a prick like kids often are.

at the same time, you'd be fucking shocked at how wrong you are veovis.
i was a substitute in a southern california school district. one student in a 1st grade class was pointed out to me by her teacher as being "slow" and a "new immigrant from Mexico." the california schools have prohibited bilingual education and speaking spanish in the classroom is seen as p. highly irregular. anyways the teacher was like "she doesn't talk much and does preschool work so don't worry about her."
of course, i began talking to her in spanish. she was shy at first, but then, began speaking a LOT about how she was from El Salvador and how her dad had a ranch in the san gabriel valley and etc. etc. all the other kids in that class looked shocked and said "she NEVER talks!"
i talked to the teacher when she came back, she's a Chicana/Latina/whatever. i told her "hey that student is actually pretty bright, she just doesnt speak english at all. also she's from el salvador, not mexico."
the teacher said "well one of those places" and proceeded to ignore the rest of what i said. this was in APRIL. the girl had been in school since december.
the school system is a place where this kind of shit happens on the reg.
but yeah that kid could have been being an ass, which is why the teacher in question should have calmed the fuck down and disengaged/figured out a better way to communicate.
e: all of this to say that a 63 year old white lady telling a kid she is frustrated with to "go back to mexico" is one of the more cosmetic problems of the american borderlands educational systems.
e of e: also that elementary-level school teachers are scumbags for the most part

The article says this particular student had a history of being disruptive, so you'll excuse me for having sympathy with the teacher especially considering that I spent 14 years watching my fellow classmates harass my teachers who clearly did not deserve such treatment.

If who are Mexican? I come from a racially non-diverse area. All of my teachers and the vast majority of my classmates were anglo as could be, so ethnicity does not figure into my experiences. The Latin-American classmates that I had either spoke English and were just like everyone else, or didn't speak English and were given special ed in Spanish. If that's not the case in this particular school, that's a shame, but I think that the teacher would have known that's the case and had the Spanish forms ready for the class.

the point is that your portland metro area generalizations are just as problematic as calling the teacher a ****.

I've lived in Portland since December 2010. I was born, raised, and went to school in middle Pennsylvania. Think Amish country.

Dallas-Fort Worth's Fox 4 reports that a disruptive student requested a Spanish-language version of the form, saying, "I'm Mexican. I'm Mexican." Oh for fuck's sake

Should say chronically disruptive. The article mentions that the kid had a history of being a jackass.

still doesn't really require being told "go back to Mexico"
i had a kid from Juarez in my classes who would always come in dropping some baloney about this or that. every single time, i'd fix him with a look, refuse to shake his hand, and shake my head until he got the message that he needed to calm the fuck down.
he did and i didn't need to drop any racist shit on him.
again, i feel for the teacher in this situation, my first posts communicated that. but the minute she let her frustration get the best of her she should have shut the fuck up and sent his ass out of class for being chronically disruptive instead of verbally harrasing him.

Infraction for prejudice language. Please don't do it again especially when making a legitimate comment like you did- it completely detracts from what you're saying. Thanks.

While the teacher was undoubtedly racist in her comment, you have to read the part where it says "the student had a history of being disruptive". From that information, I take it that he was a jock who thought it'd be funny to disrupt class. Sorry, but I have to go with the teacher on this one. I know lots of jocks in my school, and I feel bad for any teacher who has to put up with this bullshit

Words like the ones she said don't just come out in times of stress. Shit like that is already in your head. A self accepted reaction if you will.

I learned English from rap music and ESL classes when I was little, so I can sympathize. But if the kid really was just saying that to be a dumbass, then I don't feel for him.
That said, she didn't have to resort to saying that.

I don't exactly approve of the type of comment she made, but it seemed like it was sarcasm directly relevant to the situation.
If somebody distributes a form to me in a language I can't read, I think it's obvious that I would try to say so, not use my ethnic/national background as an excuse.
So, it's hard for me to take sides on this type of issue. I don't want to see an older teacher lose a job over something like this, but I don't want immigrant-bashing to become accepted anywhere, either.
