Really important questions, but this belongs in the Learning forum. You'll get more answers there. :)

The Soviet Union was formed as a confederacy. The Communist Party was what glued the republics together. Once the Communist ideology was officially renounced during the Perestroika, the republics were free to go.

What other countries, when?
Lenin's party, the Bolsheviks, were based in Russia, but Lenin and Trotsky were living in exile. Actually Trotsky was not in the party.
Then in February there was a spontaneous revolution which took the Bolasheviks by surprise, and the Tsar abdicated. Then some of his ministers formed a Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks supported this, and had no plans for a revolution.
At the time, the Bolsheviks were STAGIST, believing that capitalism had to come before socialism, so they believed they were in the middle or beginning of a capitalist revolution.
Trotsky believed otherwise.
Lenin came round to Trotsky's view. Lenin forced the Bolsheviks to adopt his view and Trotsky joined them and organised the revolution.
So the revolution in October happened and the Bolsheviks began a democratic system based on soviets, in coalition with the Left SR party. The first world war was till going on and the Russian army was fighting Germany, so Lenin's priority was a peace deal.
But some generals turned their armies to fighting the Bolshevik government, and the Left SR party walked out of government as they did not want peace with Germany.
So are you talking about countries taken over in the civil war, or after WW2?

I think he refers to the countries that formed the Soviet Union, as he asks whether the (other) countries went in to the Soviet Union by their own will or were forced. Eastern Europe post WW2 wasn't a part of the SU, although they to a large extent were controlled by/allied with it.

Well, they were part of the Russian Empire and involved in the civil war, and became part of the USSR during that. For instance Kazakhstan was made an autonomous republic in 1920, part of the USSR. It lost it's autonomy in 1936 and was renamed.

No. The Soviet Union was not formed by a simple continuation of Imperial Russian land. The nations which formed the Soviet Union were included into the Soviet Union in a few different ways, namely voluntarily or forcible annexation.

This has nothing to do with the question asked.

It was just the basic background. Yes the geography changed a bit during the civil war.
