i'm happy with the velvet underground and the clash's positions. but i really can't believe that U2 is ahead of janis joplin.......... that's just fucked up......... simon and garfunkel are in decent places. PLEASE TELL ME WHITNEY HOUSTON IS NOT AHEAD OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD.......... oh dear lord. she is.... i just may kill myself...... sandanista! at 404. why the fuck is that white stripes album ahead of sandinista? wow. i'm alternately happy and mad here........

ever since they rated Kurt Cobain 12th best guitarest of all time, I've realized what Rolling Stone and every other magazine on the subject is. They cater to musical know-nothings who like popular music, and always add Nirvana in there somewhere just to win readers. Its crappy that they claim to have authority on anything, when they would never tell things like they were.

EXAMPLE No. 1:
273. The Slim Shady LP, Eminem
274. Mothership Connection, Parliament
High Numbers aside, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!?!?!

Ugh..the first rap album is at 48. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Public Enemy...that's a bad choice. The third is almost 100 more down and it's Ready to Die by Biggie..before Straight Outta Compton and Paid in Full?!
*cough* bullshit *cough*
No Tupac either I guess selling $38 million records dosen't mean they have to be any good. <_<
What's up with all the best of albums on there?
52. Greatest Hits, Al Green
53. The Birth of Soul: The Complete Atlantic Rhythm and Blues Recordings, 1952 - 1959, Ray Charles
60. Greatest Hits, Sly and the Family Stone
106. Portrait of a Legend 1951 - 1964, Sam Cooke
147. Dreams to Remember: The Otis Redding Anthology, Otis Redding
They came out with real albums!

EXAMPLE No. 2
336. Superunknown, Soundgarden
This belongs at least before the 50's.
Where would we be without Spoon Man, I ask you?
Grunge's (If I may use the word) best album, even better than Jane's Addiction (before they were popular...).

EXAMPLES NO. 3 THROUGH ....
41. Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, The Sex Pistols
42. The Doors, The Doors
43. The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
44. Horses, Patti Smith
45. The Band, The Band
46. Legend, Bob Marley and the Wailers
47. A Love Supreme, John Coltrane
Explain to me how the Sex Piss-tols are better than any of the bands below them. Johnny Rotten and John Coltrane are not only on different levels, they have different professions. One is a musician who invokes the beauty of creation and the lord through his sax, and the other is a processed nihilist made for immature know-nothings.
And about Legend. They HAD to get Bob's name in there somewhere, so, rather than using a real album, they do a glorified "Best Of' number. Not that I'm down on Legend, per se, but much better things are out there. But hey, as long as they are communicating with their audience, who am I to judge, right?
I also never saw any Surrealistic Pillow (maybe it was on there, but not on top 100  , Monk's Dreams, (Excitable Boy is still a good album!!!), and many other noticable o-MISS-ions.

No CSNY in top 100 either. hmm...
anyway, this whole list is faulty. 500 Albums could be anything. How can you compare smooth and cool jazz to sharp, ragged rap? Or Southern Rock to Pop?
Can't be done. Apples to Oranges doesn't work

Man you're crazy it's easy to compare Sgt. Pepper and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Why?
I like The Beatles, but Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band must be the most overrated album ever.
Abbey Road, The White Album, Revolver, Let it be, Magical Mystery Tour and Rubber Soul are all better than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
397. Rain Dogs, Tom Waits
What are you doing down there Tom?

agreed. I heard Step Right Up on 89.7's request program. I knew who asked for it.

They can't please everyone, guys. They obviously threw in some of everyone's thing just to satisfy them. I'm satisfied. I'd be more satisfied if Wish You Were Here was up there and so was every other Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Queen, Stones, Doors, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Cream, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix albums were in the top hundred or so, but that would piss off lots of people.
Purple
24th November 2003, 07:10

EDIT: Prince - 1999 number 163
EDIT: Prince - Dirty Mind number 203

I hate things like this. Everybody's always trying to create a Definitive list these days, for instance, have you watched VH1 these days? 100% "Top Ten This" followed by "Top 50 That."
THey just made this list for publicity, and evidently it worked. Everybody knows you can't quantify this stuff.

*gasp* Sade's not on there.....thats it....ITS BULLSHIT....I don't even want to look at it...

U2 ahead of Bob Marley, Ramones, The doors, Zeppelin, the Who, The Clash
Give me a break.
Edit
The fact that U2 has 4 or 5 albums on there makes me a little sick. Jay-Z on the list? wtf.
At least Cat Stevens got some credit at 206, and my fave band Pearl Jam at 207 & 4xx
368. Rage Against the Machine, Rage Against the Machine
426. The Battle of Los Angeles, Rage Against the Machine
Dr. Rosenpenis
24th November 2003, 20:48
The order in which they arranged the albums really confuses me. The Clash ahead of Led Zeppelin? U2 ahead of Led Zeppelin? Michaeil Jackson ahead of Led Zeppelin? Since when is Nirvana better than David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Who, and Chuck Berry?
I'm just glad they included most of my favourites.
I'd never expect taht from Rolling Stone.

Wow, your worried about Marilyn Manson being on the top 5000 albums? I pity you.
*gasp* Sade's not on there.....thats it....ITS BULLSHIT....I don't even want to look at it...
For this, on the other hand, I agree 100%. Sade has one of the best voices of all time (and...she is quite attractive, too...). Her stuff in the 80's was heaven.
I agree with Mojo. American's are so tied up with quantifying their personal enjoyments on lists anymore. I guess it makes us feel like the music we listen to is popular and, therefore, good.
Its all shit though

crap, crap, crap.
THE DOORS, U2, PINK FLOYD should have dominated the top 10. this is blasphemy i tell ya. and someone here said it best, NO FUCKING 2PAC?
and why a top 500? what the fuck is this all about? nobody's reading RSmag anymore so they have to go that sensationnal on the people?

Where are all these albums?
Colombia Colly
Who Say Jah No Dread
Dread Locks Dread
Two Sevens Clash
Man in the Hills
Pick a Dub
Return of the Super Ape
oh, wait...I don't care what Rolling Stone think are the 500 greatest albums of all time. What's more, if I did care, I wouldn't complain about their choices, because I've never seen a list of The X greatest anythings ever ever that I agreed with. It is to be expected, really.
And don't forget, Hunter Thomspon used to write for Rolling Stone.

The ROlling Stone Magazine was cool for about ten years: didn't its first publication come with a little love attached?
But, like everything that was once cool, these swine have digested it and turned into rank and vile shit to fling at the masses like monkeys in a cage. A cage formed by Freedom and Love, man.

Since everyone is picking on the list, I'll add some good things about it:
- Robert Johnson, the greatest bluesman of all-time, is quite high.
- Pet Sounds is number 2! Beach Boys own.
- Guns 'n' Roses at number 61!
- Paul Simon's Graceland at 81!
- Cash at 88. Perhaps he should be higher on the list, but it's nice to him on there.
I dunno, I suppose the top of the list is too heavily in favour of The Beatles.

Did anyone click on the link to look at Rate The Music's top 25 albums? Looks a lot different than Rolling Stone's:
http://www.rollingstone.com/features/cover...en.asp?pid=2409 (http://www.rollingstone.com/features/coverstory/featuregen.asp?pid=2409)
Lists are stupid. The best albums of all-time is so subjective it's unreal. It's impossible to say that one amazing album is better than another, and so many good albums were left off the list ie. Rush-2112, Offspring-Smash, Dead Kennedys-Fresh Fruit, Deftones-Around the Fur, Bon Jovi-Slippery When Wet, et cetera (I apologize if some of those were on there and I missed them). And to put Nevermind so much higher than Rage Against the Machine debut, Weezer's Blue Album, and The Pumpkins Siamese Dream is absolutely preposterous. Those three albums are all better than Nevermind, not question. Tool's Aenima deserved to be on there too. That list largely ignored the Nineties and all prog/art rock.

27th November 2003, 05:47
If they wanted to put together a real list, they shouldn't have any anthologies or best of compilations. Secondly, they should just whittle it down to one artist one album.
Dr. Rosenpenis
27th November 2003, 15:28
I completely agree that they shoudn't have the best-of and anthology albums.
SgtPepper369
28th November 2003, 07:22
Yeah, Compilations don't count in my opinon. But this was an artist poll so it is more acurate than say... VH1. So I like the list.
If I could change 2 things about the list it would be to move "Nevermind" to a Higher Number (farther from 1) and "Who's Next" To A Lower Number (closer to 1)

For most of his career he only knew a few guitar chords.
