i feel like i've come from a tradition that has celebrated production at the expense of the natural environment and being a city dweller i'm kind of attached to the ugliness of urbanism
but still - i feel i need to read up on the effects of capitalism on the environment --- something i've ignored (often wilfully)
any recommended texts?

I left this out of the facebook message, but you might also consider reading some of the stuff the situationists wrote about urban geography/architecture, while not necessarily relating to the environment per se, it speaks to the alienating nature of the modern city.

The Practice of the Wild and A Place in Space by Gary Snyder, Defending the Earth by Murray Bookchin and Dave Foreman and The Modern Crisis by Murray Bookchin all address this issue.

In that case it might(?) be worth watching END:CIV on YouTube because that's nowhere near as longgggg but still gives a decent enough overview of the first...I forget, 4-5 points in the book...

The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey is a lovely fun read about eco anarchist sabotage. Abbey wrote other nature books I haven`t read.
Joel Kovel has a couple of books on The Environment written from a Marxist perspective which are good.
Raymond Williams, one of the greatest of Marxist thinkers, was a total country boy. He frriggin hated the city.

Oh, I find Enrique Leff pretty cool. I think 'Green production' is the only one of his books to have been translated into English, though...

A really great ecosocialist book is Late Victorian Holocausts by Mike Davis. A really fascinating account of the effects of colonialism on how people dealt with natural disaster in Brazil, India and China.
He called it his entrance into the field of political ecology.
It seems its all online on googlebooks: http://books.google.ca/books?id=3IrKEzgkQkMC&printsec=frontcover&dq=late+victorian+holocausts&hl=en&sa=X&ei=tTk-T4GMHuPW0QHah8C7Bw&ved=0CDAQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=late%20victorian%20holocausts&f=false
Well not all of it -- they skip pages....
