I suppose it is because we don't see only the socially conservative aspect of those cultures. I hate the rampant social conservatism in countries like Japan. However, there are many more aspects of Japanese culture I like. I will not cease liking them simply because there are bad aspects of the culture as well.

Culture is incredibly complex, and if any individual only sees the negative aspects of a culture while denying all of the positives, they're stupid. I can say the same for anyone who only sees the appealing aspects of a culture and pretends the faults in their customs don't exist.

Yes, it is tongue-in-cheek.
I don't believe that any society is beyond progressing. However, societal progress is not linear, and I believe each should do so at their own pace, otherwise, from what I've seen, it will cause lots of internal tension. I also don't believe that the governments of most Western countries seriously care about social progress in the Third World. At the very best, it is a low priority for them, as they've made moves in recent decades that slowed progress. (i.e. backing the 1980 Turkish coup, backing Pinochet in 1973, backing the mujahideen in Afghanistan during the 1980s...)

I believe this is the opinion of most leftists. Most I have met in real life would agree with me.

I agree, hippies do idolize socially conservative cultures too much. But, that doesn't mean that we should DESTROY the cultures. Instead, we should LIBERALIZE the cultures to respect the freedom and rights of all the members of the culture. This will be done naturally by people of that culture.

The OP probably meant the post as a conservative mockery of leftist hippies but he/she does have a point.Many Western leftists, (not just "hippies") are deeply alienated from their culture. Contemporary US culture is seen as highly commercialized, competitive and spiritually dead. This feeling isn't just with hippies but is very common among liberal/left middle class people.

Its well known how native people's of North America are both bemused and angered by whites attempting to co-opt their culture with New Age sweat lodges and shamanism. "Are white people so spiritually dead they have to appropriate our culture?" is a common question.

First, the grass is always greener, etc.It has been common for people in many cultures to romanticize what is believed to be exotic. People also tend to romanticize cultures which have what they feel they lack.The Romans, in their "decadent"period romanticized the Germans, who they felt still had the warrior values which they thought they lost.

Sometimes the romanticism can be deeply reactionary, as French Orientalism which provided the ideology of imperialism.

It can be said that much of Western culture is spiritually dead, partly because capitalism has been more advanced and Western societies are futher away from the "barbarism" of primitive communism.

The Western fascination with Japan is interesting and a bit complicated.Japan was/is a deeply conformist, hierarchical society. On the other hand, as someone said "traditional Japanese culture is the US counter culture" .Reiki, Zen, much martial arts, healing arts, even s & m were highly developed in Japanese culture. Japanese culture has an aesthetic sense which has long been compelling to Westerners.

Its interesting that in socially conservative cultures people have a clearly defined place in society, which is not true of US culture, which is extremely individualistic and atomized.

Its also interesting that on the US frontier, friom the 18th to 19th centuries, it was very common for white settlers captured by native peoples to prefer staying with the native tribe, but it was very rare for a native person to prefer to assimilate into white society,
