"Judging by the hundreds of cars that are en route to Lisbon ... I think that we will have a big demonstration of indignation," said Armenio Carlos, general secretary of the CGTP union which called the protest.

Organisers said that vehicles were heading to the capital from both northern and southern areas.

The protest comes just days before officials from the so-called Troika -- the European Union, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund -- arrive in Portugal on their latest mission to evaluate progress on the country's bailout programme.

Portugal became the third European Union member state -- after Greece and Ireland -- to seek international aid when it received a loan of 78 billion euros ($103 billion) from the EU and the IMF last May.

In return it agreed to sell-offs of public companies and labour reforms including less holiday time, which sparked protests in several cities.

We had a 300 thousand people demonstation today (wich is preety good) and maybe one of the biggest since the revolutionary 80's. As usual no violence and communist control over the demonstration.
Also last week prime minister said we portuguese people have to stop being pussies and our ancestors were big discovers because they werent always complaining ,it left many people mad and many people reactionless as my country uses to be.
The idea of this one was to turn Terreiro do paço(royal square) in terreiro do povo (people's square) I think it was achieved.

Because this would be worthless without pics:

We want to work, we demand rights.

Sounds very good.

I heard the CGTP is calling for a national strike and that people are demanding that Portugal protects itself from the influence of IMF and EU.

As I understand it the minimum wage of Portugal is below the poverty line. Is this correct?

Portugal needs a new Carnation Revolution. Instead of taxing the rich, that right wing government is taking everything the poor have. They won't stop until they turn Portugal into Europe's USA, Something has to be done....

We had a strike last week, it wasnt as big as the previous ones but it was a preety big problem to catch the bus.

The minimum wage here is around 500€. Without government help 40% of people would be below povery line, they want to cut government help:rolleyes:

Surprise, surprise the IMF wants to force Portugal to lower corporate tax rate and raise VAT to compensate.
And with this prime minister we have that never worked in his life and that is now handing out jobs that pay 40k a month to people that helped him get to power without having to work I think we are screwed.

Thank you for posting from Lisbon, and best of luck in the struggle against the IMF austerity monsters.

Was this something he said word for word? If so than it needs to be in quotes and sourced, in my opinion, as otherwise it is a sexist statement.

O primeiro-ministro, Pedro Passos Coelho, apelou, esta segunda-feira, aos portugueses para serem "mais exigentes", "menos complacentes" e "menos piegas"

I only found it in portuguese, it says. "Prime minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, this Monday asked portuguese to be more demanding less complacent..." and then the word that caused the indignation, in portuguese piegas is someone who is always complaining and is in portuguese a synonim for "maricas" wich is pussy, not in the vagina meaning of the word obviously.

I can't speak for Portugal, but they're certainly fast and loose with that word in Spain.
