I want to put on weight and gain muscle so I can beat everyone up.
Seriously though, I'm a skinny runt, how can I put on weight? I have a high metabolism and I get full very quickly :(

Eat some extra protein and start lifting weights. If you go for protein shakes, I find vanilla is the least nasty. In a blender. With milk and a banana. You end up with a high-protein banana milkshake.

It'll give you mass to work with. But you'll have to work harder.
In all seriousness, the only way I was able to gain any weight was eating poorly, drinking a lot, and getting older (metabolism naturally slows).
Now I am trying to trim down/get fit.

Eat more calories than you burn is the simple answer, but If you want to gain muscle mass then you need to be exercising too. So eat a good quality but high calorie diet and do some weights. I'm not an expert though by any means.

The easiest way to gain weight is by adding another meal. It doesn't have to be a huge thanksgiving dinner that you dread every single day but something with substantial nutrition that's planned and not a spontaneous remembrance that you're trying to gain weight cause that's totally inconsistent and when I do that I often forget. Consider getting a cheap plastic protein shaker and putting instant oatmeal (the bulk kind, not the weird fruity flavor sugar soda crap) in it with blueberries, cashew butter and almond milk. Working out is gonna make you want to eat a bit more anyways even if you're not usually hungry as a lite eater and if your nutrition is relatively sound you'll put on muscle weight. I think you'll start to gain weight and then you can add another small meal.
When I wake up in the morning I'm not usually hungry unless I make something or have something available and sit down with it. Then I realize I'm hungry enough to eat. Once you continue to feed the machine it may be beneficial to have a relatively constant flow of food like trailmix, almonds, cashews (yeah I'm on a cashew kick right now) and you'll get the added benefit of getting more nutrition every day and a wider range of nutrients. To actually gain weight if you were lifting in the gym I'd suggest of course a protein source but really easy healthy carbs from something like sweet potatoes. Bananas are great too.

Except no. If Nox is anything like me eating a bunch of shit won't make a difference.

Nox, there is a limit to how big people get and it's hormonally driven.
This calories in calories out advice to 'get big' is pseudo-science at best.

I am super skinny, and my friend who is rather fat gave me this advise. Eat till you are full, then keep eating. Just make sure you stop before you get sick. only take a drink when you have too. Finally eat small bites slowly, you will be able to fit more in your stomach. I never took his advice, so I can't say rather or not it works

Take up a combat sport. You don't necessarily need weight to be fit and strong. I suggest boxing simply because that is what I do and love. However it isn't for everyone so pick something you would like to do maybe not competitively but working out is most important really. Any sport that requires a lot of exertion and strength building exercises will do. Wrestling is a fine example, as well as Judo.
Also, taking up a sport just so you can beat everyone up won't get you far since you are taking it for all the wrong reasons. I for example took up boxing at age 15 when I had to go to court for getting into several fights in school. Boxing saved me and I am really thankful for it. Sure, I am physically fit and strong, however I am not as confrontational as I was when I was younger and I am far less likely to fly off the handle over some irrelevant shit. I wish I took up boxing when I was even younger, maybe it would have helped me stay out of trouble more.

:shrugs: look for meal replacement shakes, they arent that expensive and those things are like 1000 calories a pop and have all sort of goodie nutrients in them, that is a very easy way to add calories. buy a gym membership and do some strength training, look up in the internet about that. boxing is cool and all if you are into that sort of thing, but it is easier to add weight with much less effort by lifting weights and eating loads of calories and proteins.

Yeah, that is much easier to do. I was just suggesting a sport since it is a bit more exciting then pumping weights. (At least for me. I hate lifting weights and crap, it just bores me to death. I was always a bit hyper though )
Also Nox, if you are going to start drinking supplements you had better work out accordingly. Taking a bunch of supplements and then half-assing you're workouts is counterproductive.
You either do it fully, or you don't do it at all.

Does 20 push ups a day count as working out?
ВАЛТЕР
13th February 2012, 23:01
No...
If twenty is your maximum. Do 10 sets of 5 pushups every day and progress every week by one.
So next week you can do 10 sets of 6, then the week after 10 sets of 7, etc etc. Do the workout every day in order to properly progress.
Also, mix in more workouts other than pushups. I suggest pullups, and dips. These are great workouts which build strength and you can do them at home or in a park. You will progress fairly quickly.
I would also suggest running for cardio, but that is a new commitment all in itself.

its good to start like that but if you are serious about gaining weight, its better to do heavy lifts with short reps. some bodyweight excersizes are awesome though, like dips and pullups. but if you want to commit to gaining weight get a gym membership and do heavy ass lifting like squatting, deadlifts, benchpress, and the good bodyweight excerzises, which are mainly dips and pullups. it depends on your personality tho, i like lifting because i can blast heavy metal while i do it and i was never too much of a hyper person. gym memberships are not expensive. ymca gym is like 6 bucks a month lol

Push ups is not the perfect muscle builder, more for endurance. If you dont modify them (put on a heavy backpack, or doing them by putting youre feets high up, or even hanstand push ups). So lifting weights and try to figure out youre how much calories you need and add some extra on that and left nature take its course

you wont get size results from push ups
the best body weight exercise for size is pull ups
you need squat, dead lifts and bench press.

Lucky, I wish I had a fast metabolism
Anyways, the only thing you can do is lift weights. Get a set of weights for your room, or go to a gym. Start off with the low weights (10s and 12s). Don't give a shit if anyone calls you weak for using these, everybody who is a body builder had to start off from the little weights. Remember, it'll take a few weeks before you start to see results
Now, there are many benefits to having muscles, most obvious one is that it makes carrying things a lot easier:)

Changing your eating habits will not give you the results you desire.
Your best bet is to exercise more, most specifically anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise is specific weigh lifts which target specific muscles. So push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, etc...
Most of your body weight comes from muscle (and bone) which weighs more than fat. You will not "gain muscle and weight so you can beat everyone up" by eating a shit ton of food. This will just make you fat and unable to beat anyone up.
You need a vigorous exercise regime coupled with an increased diet of protein/carbs/veggies. Cut out the extra sugars, sodas, and ice cream. Up the chicken/fish, veggies, rice, beans, etc... The more you exercise the hungrier you will be. Eat a good portion of food which is well-balanced and don't eat right before or right after you work out. Wait at least 30 minutes.
Better Diet + Exercise = Positive Body Change
