Georgia in political turmoil (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3229266.stm)

Hardly a peoples revolution but an interesting development just the same. Does anyone know where the opposition stands politically though as I can't seem to find out anywhere. Apparently Georgia has became very poor since the break up of the USSR in 1992, most of it's citizens live below the poverty line, they have obviously had enough.

But does Mikhail Saakashvili and his group represent the interests of the working class and can they put any faith in him?

Also, does Georgia have any communist/marxist parties or groups, and I wonder what position they will take.

I was hoping someone would make mention of this - I have no idea the party platform of the NEW NATIONAL MOVEMENT, nor it's leader Mikhail Saakashvili.

Saakashvili’s confrontational rhetoric has some observers in Tbilisi worried that Georgia may be headed for a return of the kind of civil strife that enveloped the country during the early 1990s. Saakashvili’s rhetoric has already caused a split among opposition groups. While the Burjanadze-Democrats and the Ertoba bloc have joined the National Movement in the united front, other influential parties – especially Labor and New Rights – are staying away.

"Every party, every political force has its own path and makes its own choice," the Imedi television channel quoted New Rights leader David Gamkrelidze as saying. "Our choice is to avoid the escalation of the situation and street ultimatums."

Meanwhile, Labor Party leader Shalva Natelashvili accused Saakashvili of leading Georgia to the brink of a national disaster. "Your fight is looking for ways to destroy our motherland and obliterate it from the map of history. ... But we will not give you the right to do so."

Presidential spokesman Kakha Imnadze characterized an opposition demand that Shevardnadze resign as "incomprehensible," Imedi reported. He accused Saakashvili of conspiring to carry out a coup. "This is quite a covert operation being conducted by them to usurp power," Imnadze said.

Yes, I have been following the events in Georgia for a couple of weeks, now. Shevardnandze, the current leader of Georgia, is refusing to resign, despite the size of protests against his office. 4,000-10,000 people have organized(perhaps more, by now), outside of the parliament building. If a protest on that scale occured in the U.S., it would be around 240,000-310,000 people! And thanks, Iepilei, for bringing that other info into light, from the article. There are communist/Marxist parties in Georgia, but none of them hold anywhere near a majority vote for an election. From what I have read and seen, though, no.. the National Movement represents the ideals of a small group of people, and doesn't really hold the interests of the people in mind.

I was gonna start a post on this but you beat me to it.

If no-one knows where the oppostion lie politically, then where do the people in power stand? and what did they do wrong?

The biggest thing that strikes me here is that a tiny group have seized power so easily, if only the working class were fully conscious and organised, they could have a revolution and take power with no trouble at all, it just goes to show the importance of our tasks as Marxists, education, discussion and organisation, you never know whats around the corner

I fully support the ouster of Shevardnandze, he helped to dismember the Soviet Union and was collaborating with the Americans, even allowing American soldiers into Georgia! It seems from press coverage in the west that they are trying to pretend that he is still president and refusing to recognize the popular government.

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze has said he will consider holding fresh elections if protesters occupying parliament leave the building. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3231008.stm)

I think he may be clutching at straws here

I have just seen this.

It seems this man was one of those who "gave the URSS democracy", and it seems he was just a corrupt dictator with illegal elections, who ended up ruining his country's economy.

This man was part of the Communist party, it seems this will happen in the leninist "vanguard party", infiltrated cappies interested in politics who bring "democracy" but then are financially supported by yanquiland and hold fraudulent elections.

I'm hearing rumors that the new guy is US 'educated' and has links to the Mafia, which wouldn't be a good thing :(
