Small step in a bigger issue of how this country treats those whom they judge using ridiculous high school standards. All hard fought for gains can be taken away at any time so long as the institutions for oppression remain. Are single issue battles a waste of time? I for one would rather see all this great action coalesced into a larger push towards the final answer, socialism now! But a good gain none the less.

Thread title is misleading. The Supreme Court hasn't ruled on this. An appeals court ruled on it, and the case is now potentially closer to a hearing in the Supreme court.

And the progressives cheer under the implication that isolated legislative victories represent the amelioration of social shitheadism. We cannot afford to take our eyes off the prize, that is, smashing bourgeois hegemony in this context.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The end of segregation was nothing to cheer over. Not only did the system not change, but was life was not improved for any citizen. What a waste of time that was! If the CPUSA spent less time fighting for racial and gender equality in the 1930s we'd be better off! /sarcasm

Whether it's a victory at a strike or legislative change that gives a lot of people actual good, there will be naysayers. How about the inverse of this?

"ALERT: All Social Security pensions and food stamps and welfare abolished as of Dec 1, 2012

--Why are all the progressives crying? We should be agitating for revolution, not protecting meager safety nets.

Same sex marriage is superior. Same sex couples have LOWER divorce rates and LOWER their children, adopted or otherwise, and have higher average incomes than straight couples. I think opposite sex marriage needs to be reviewed. Heterosexual marriage certificates should only last two years before requiring renewal. It will prevent women from being trapped in abusive heterosexual relationships.

I'm not pleased with this ruling. It shoul have demanded that the state of California pay reparations to the gay community for allowing the campaign of hatespeech that proposition eight encouraged.

This is a good perspective to have. Historically whenever public anger has been rising at the establishment, they have bought off progressive anger by throwing small scraps of social reform. A good example of this is the wave of protests in the United States during the 1960's. During this time, the Supreme Court began expanding the minority rights, which in practical terms really never changed anything. These token reforms do not lead to any progress towards overthrowing capitalism, and on the contrary, give illusory gains to progressives. While liberals cheer on their hard earned "victory," the bourgeois are busily consolidating their economic hegemony. The false victories of the 1960's quieted the left, and paved the way for neo-liberalism.

I fully expect the Supreme Court to rule in favor of gay rights and abortion in the coming days. This is to provide a smoke screen for their consolidation of power and the weakening of the working class through decisions like Citizens United, and I wouldn't even be surprised if they ruled the so-called "Obamacare" legislation unconstitutional as well. In this perspective, social reforms aren't necessarily a good thing since they can give a false sense of accomplishment. The primary focus of the left should be on demolishing the economic system of Capitalism, since social issues like abortion as well as womens' and LGBT rights can never truly to be solved until the bourgeoisie have been destroyed.

I agree. Although I'm all for same sex marriage, they're only using this decision as a steam valve so that they can enact more oppressive measures without interference, or better yet, with welcome support.

Yay. Now gay people can get divorces and squabble over dividing their property just like the rest of us.
