View Full Version : Brazil: Nation-wide fight against bus fares

Brazilian students from the working class are mobilizing once again in what seems like an ever-lasting struggle for reduced fares, free pass for students and unemployed citizens and quality of public transportation.

The fights come along with requests for universal access to the Universities and against the national educational plans promoted by the World Bank Group and the FMI, wich was proposed initially by President Lula of the Worker's Party and was carried on by Dilma, his successor.

These programs try to turn education into a profit-worthy buisiness, and turn public education into something exclusive for the upper class, while only qualifying the working class youths for cheap labour in the rising industry.

Just created this thread to spread the news, feel free to ask me anything related to this subject.

I will also post some documentaries and videos explaining what is happening, along with posters and updates from protests.

Also sorry for my english, long time since I have to use it properly.

Protesters occupied the municipal secretary of transport in Rio de Janeiro as an act against higher fares and for the unrestricted free pass! All support to our comrades! Spead the word!

The secretary was violently disocupied by the Police, wich didn't want to negociate and used tear gas. The occupants resisted, broke the secretary's glass door and got out escaping from the police lock in. Occupy, resist, fight to guarantee!

Can't post the source yet because of my post count, will edit that later.

After a train broke down in the Sampaio station on this thursday (9), passengers protested at Central do Brasil station, and were handled by the police and the city guard with flashbangs. In the video, you can se the riot that closed the station for nearly 40 minutes, according to witnesses.

The confusion started about 8:40am, when the station was crowded. The riots started at many locations of the station, and the Riot Police was called in. The police used tasers at many times, and there were scenes of vandalism.

This is the situation of public transportation all around Brazil, with spontaneous riots breaking out all of the time between the workers.

Will post sources and video when I am allowed to by the system.

Thank you for the support, I will post all updates that I find on independent news sources, since the big ones rarely say anything. Will also try to record/photograph the ones in my city, today I missed one because of end of year exams(only finishing my 2011 year now because of 2 month teacher strike last year).

On 23/12/12 the protests started with chanting and a peaceful march, but ended with lots of tear gas and violence. The students marched over downtown Recife, and decided to block the São Luis movie theatre street, and was hit by tear gas.

The students spread out, and the march continued with less people. At a certain point, the students decided to end the protest, but the police suddenly charged against them without warning, with one student being punched and 3 being arrested.

Just to remember you guys that the police responsible for this kind of action is the Military Police, same ones that go into the favelas with armored cars and helicopters.

Image and source will be added as soon as possible.
