I agree. Ralph Steadman is awesome!

steadman's drawings are unbelievable. he is such a quiet man youd never expect the insane happenings in his head.
the thing that always struck me most were the juxtaposition of the craziness and ink spills and splats with perfect geometric shapes.
like in the second picture he has the horizon echoing up and the bubbles. he also makes perfect circles for eyes on the craziest faces.
cani- the FEAR criterion DVd has amazing sequences for its topic menus. one is actually just like the second picture you put up, but its just the horizon and land with a few cactus, but its all moving around. thats the special features disc which also has a steadman gallery of 30(?). then the main features disc- the menu selections are underneath a white sheet and it shows a video of steadman splatering out FEAR AND LOATHING in big letters. its a close up of just the words, really cool.
also in the special features it has steadman and thompson going back to las vegas in 76(?) and it shows steadman creating some of his drawings, also very fucking cool.

I'm going to have to get that DVD. Tomorrow!
Any of you read "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved"?
Seemingly, Steadman used to offend a lot of people by showing them his sketches of them. Not very flattering from a more conservative perspective, I'm sure.

I swear, I am going to hunt The Kentucky Derby down (it's very small, right?) and read it. But it is very hard to find around these parts.

rastaman- if you go into your local bookstore you could find it easy. the latest printing of FEAR (1998 modern library) is Fear and other short stories. it has the movie cover as its cover (which is a damn shame). but inside it has steadmans illustrations over the pages, it also has KENTUCKY DERBY, and STRANGE RUMBLINGS IN AZTLAN which is a story about the trial that acosta was working on during FEAR. both are very good reads and very short- ten to fifteen minutes a piece. just go and sit in and read.
and cani about the DVd- i know baby, you'd dig it the most

Well, I didn't get that DVD. :( Yet!
Well, I don't know about this "Fear" book (is that just your abbreviated way of saying Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Alejandro?), but you should get "The Great Shark Hunt". It has the two articles Alejandro mentioned alongside a shitload more. 600+ pages....It's got loads written about Nixon, some of his writings from South America, plus a couple more in the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" style.
Loads of stuff...get it.
"The Kentucky Derby..." is only 15 pages of an ordinary sized book.

Christ Cani.
I was looking throught the New Yorker today (we just got it in-what bourgeosie home is complete without it?) and Ralph did the back page. I have to get it to you. It is his best work I have ever seen, and it has 3 dodos in it.

I'm still waiting for you to scan them into your computer.
If you do I'll arrange for you to get two hours of the Skatalites live in audio files at some stage in the near future. I saw them playing last Tuesday, it was very nice indeed.
In the meantime, check out this site, if you haven't before. Have a look around, you can read some of Thompson's early writing on there.
The "HST" section, not the "Articles and Essays" section.
