What are everyone's views on Mormons and their founder Joseph Smith( )?

Curiously, in Mormonism we can actually document how a religion is "invented"...through fraud of course.

It's a most amusing story and, if you have the time and curiosity, it's well worth looking into.

It will probably tell you more about the real nature of religion than any number of "formal" histories of "comparative religion".

RS, I do believe there are more than one "nature" of religions, but the major ones are invented. Some, shamanic ones, are more or less linked to the land and people throwing themselve into altered states of consiousness through crazy dances for "religious" purposes. That, I'd say, is different than submitting your self to some evil bastard who claims to be a god.

Mormonism, didn't Smith claim that he found a missing book from the bible and that he was part of the lost tribe of Israel?

In the first half of the 19th century, there was a "great revival" of interest in religion in the U.S., especially in the north. Our phrase "revival meeting" dates from that era.

In upstate New York, a convicted con-man, Joseph Smith, claimed that he had discovered a "new revelation" written on "gold plates" in "ancient Egyptian". A passing angel was kind enough to stop and "translate" them into King James English...whereupon they were revealed to be the book of the "lost tribes" of Israel, of whom the modern descendants are the "Indians"--native Americans.

A huge piece of fakery...but a perfect invention for the time. Many rural folk were sufficiently gullible to fall for it.

Although the Mormons consider themselves to be Christians, they are not recognized as such by other Christians for many doctrinal reasons which I shall mercifully spare you.

As you might expect, the Christians persecuted the Mormons vigorously...and Joseph Smith was dragged from an Illinois jail and lynched. Brigham Young took over and led the Mormons to Utah...where they effectively dominate that hapless state to this day.

The Mormons are among the wealthiest and fastest-growing religions in the U.S. today and are deeply involved in conservative/reactionary politics.

Among the most curious of their beliefs is that if you are good little boys and girls, then after you die, "God" gives you a planet to run...you get to "be" the "god" there.

Woo hoo!

Read the book "Under the Banner of Hevean, A Story of Violent Faith". It's about two Mormons who murder their brother's wife and their nine month old baby in the eighties. I talks about the devolpment of the Mormon faith, from a very critical view, it is very good. Really shows you "true" Mormons.

mormonism is a load of bull. why the hell would gold tablets with ancient egyptian inscriptions be found in a cave in the mountains of new york state? they wouldn't. i know a guy who goes to brigham young university. he's an ok guy. a bit dim in terms of politics and religion, but that's because he's mormon. he likes BYU because it has the hottest college girls. apparently the ultraconservative religious right churns out lots of goodlooking blondes.

SF, whoever wrote that joke should be boiled in their own pudding.

From watching South Park, I learned the Mormons believed god (as a punishment) turned the skin color of the real Native Americans red because they killed all the Jewish tribes. Can any one validate this information, do mormons really belive this?

Here's a philosophical question for you all:

What makes this religion any more ridiculous than the other religions? Because there aren't as many believers? Because it's relatively new? That's really the only differences, there's no way to prove or disprove the Mormans, just like theres no way to prove or disprove the Christians, or the Jews, or the Buddhists.

Religion has made itself failsafe with bullshit, take this example: "Hey, aren't there like 4,000 different species of termites in the world? If two of each of those were on Noah's Ark, wouldn't they have eaten the Ark?" Answer: "No of course not, God provided for them."

You see? Religion will never be proven or disproven, because they do not use logic and reason, but rather they use Theoretical bullshit, so give it up, you will disprove the Mormans, the Christians, the Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Non Secular Satanists, or anyone.

the morons also believed that all black people were descendents of Ham (in genesis). since ham raped his father noah, the mor(m)ons beleived that all blacks were inherintly evil. they wouldn't let blacks into the church until the middle of last century and when they were in they were not allowed to hold any church offices or participate as anything but 'servants to god'. then came the 60s and 70s and the US said they would no longer grant tax exempt status to those religions that were inherintly racist. lo and behold the next month the leader of the mor(m)on church has A VISION FROM GOD, and guess what god tells him, you guessed it- blacks are alright after all.
nearly this exact same thing happened in the 19th century in utah, the federal gov. made polygamy illegal and the state of Utah was about to lock up half the mormons. all the sudden, right after the law comes down, the leader has this vision in which god talks to him and says that mormons no longer half to practice polygamy. what a coincidence...

Ham did not rape his father, he looked at him naked and told his brothers so his son was cursed to be a slave for the rest of his life.

I think the South Park episode did an interesting explanation of Mormons

It was in song with "dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb" in the background.
