they've been trained in this sort of shit for years, going back to the troubles at least. there are purpose built "urban environment" training courses for that purpose. plus yeah - the olympics is going to be a massive event, the bulk of which will take place moments away from some of the poorest estates in london. i don't see anything conspiratorial in this, of course the state will be preparing for potential unrest.

It does seem like the UK has devoted a LOT of resources towards security for the olympics. But the olympics always seems to bring out the worst in host countries.

definitely, a huge amount. and various new by-laws have been brought in that will probably never be reversed, giving the police new powers in controlling public order situations, etc. i'd say this is fairly common tho
