Again with this "stepped aside for Raul" bullshit. Is Western media even aware Cuba has a National Assembly? This one takes the cake though; apparently Raul was the "long-designated successor." Didn't know the Guardian was tight with Fidel like that to have known for so long.

In any case, I'd love to pick it up. Castro is not just an intriguing leftist figure, but a very interesting personality with lots of stories to tell.

What are the odds that he will tell us the truth this time with respect to the "interesting story" of General Arnaldo Ochoa Sanchez?

Fidel Castro isn't a terrible guy, but I wouldn't to say that he's a genuine communist. I enjoy reading some of his shit though, though he has profoundly anti-Marxist views on certain things.

I am aware that he has not always described himself as a communist; he was once a left-wing nationalist. Still, I have not read many of Castro's writings. I have only read "History Will Absolve Me" (from his pre-communist days) and parts of My Life: A Spoken Autobiograpy. What anti-Marxist views do you believe he holds?

Let me check..

Generally most of Fidel's views are based on an idealist perspective rather than a materialist one. An example of this is that he believes Venezuela to have undergone a genuine socialist revolution. Marxism depends on having a solid materialist perspective, something he completely lacks. It tinges just about everything he says, and it shows.

You might wish to check out this website.

You can see that he has progressive views, but not Marxist ones generally.

When I was 16, I saw Castro being interviewed by Barbara Walters on TV. My politics were not yet formed -- I remember being really impressed by this interview, though. Walters kept on asking Fidel questions about his personal life. He calmly kept on asking her why she, or anybody would be interested in his personal life. He wanted to talk about politics. I thought it was really cool -- in part because it exposed Barbara for the idiot that she is. And it also underscored how moronic the news media is in the US, always focusing on the personal aspects of people and not their political program. I did ultimately become a Trotskyist, but I will never forget this great interview. Of course, I don't think Fidel has ever been a Marxist. . . .

Are you aware that the National Assembly has legislative power and not executive?

In the book he tells the whole story of his life... and yet it's still shorter than the average length of one of his speeches.

That's Fidel's modesty.:)

As both his supporters and detractors are fond of saying: "Fidel is a Fidelist."
