than the cops in India. In India, any cop can pick ppl off the street, take him to the station and harass him. No human rights! So stop complaining about cops in the US.:cursing: at least, they do things by the book.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You said cops in the US behave? That they don't harrass people, perform false arrests, and don't violate human rights? Have you ever been to the US? Have you heard of Fred Hampton, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Rodney King to name three famous cases?
I've never been arrested, but a cop beat the shit out of me when I was a teenager for skateboarding. Hows that for doing things by the book? Another handcuffed me to a park bench for two hours because he said I had drugs on me (I was talking on my phone).

My brother is a US citizen. He said things are great and nothing like this ever happens.

Your brother is either clueless or lying to you.

Well all I can say is that "better" is relative term. Yet I feel that a cop is a cop. The pain you feel when a cop hits you will not feel much different in India or Dallas.

Although I imagine cops would generally be worse in India, all corruption is worth fighting.

Recommended reading: "In Dubious Battle" by John SteinbeckRecommended visiting: my neighborhood. Spend two hours sitting by the subway station watching teenagers get hassled for bumming change or selling dimes of weed. Hang out with some black and Latino youth to see people picked up by cops at anytime for bullshit. Then go to Occupy Oakland and get kettled by police, which, by the way, the local paper here just ran a story about how the police picked cops with a history of violence and aggression in order to intimidate protesters. Also, the OPD have such a history that even the federal government is getting involved to "clean up" the department - so cops in the US don't even follow the loose rules they are given to begin with.
That being said, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if police in India or other countries act much worse at different times. I went to Greece and cops there had machine guns and riot gear while they hung out in front of department stores on completely peaceful days. On the other hand cops can't go onto Universities in Greece meanwhile in the US, public universities have their own police forces and local colleges have permanent on-site sheriffs and grade schools have cops stationed throughout the day.
So yeah, it's all relative. All capitalist countries need a police for the same reasons: to preserve economic inequality, prevent disruptions of business and the status quo, and specifically to prevent large groups of people "mobs". How cops do this, how brutal they are, what kinds of rights they don't infringe upon has less to do with nation, culture, or laws, and everything to do with the balance of class forces and the situation of the country. In India where there is rapid urbanization, migration to cities, and booming capitalism and rising elites, I would not doubt that the police are empowered to act very severely.

"Women in Pakistan should stop complaining about discrimination and violence, because women in Saudi Arabia have it worse"
That is the logic you just applied.
at least, they do things by the book.
Tell that to the hundreds of people they've slain.

Indian police are corrupt and savage by nature. Read this chilling story:

2 things that piss me off a bit about this.
1. What experience do you have with cops in the US, "by the book?" Have you ever been thrown to the ground? Pulled in for nothing, then released, without charges.
2. SO WHAT if India is worse ... THats like saying "hey I got slapped in the face, but hey, some people get shot in the balls, so why complain." Its idiotic reasonin.

Only the truest idealist would think this is qualitative. The state apparatus has the capacity for oppression everywhere, even in places where we consider more politically "free." The degree is hardly relevant. The bourgeois state and its instruments of oppression are a material reality everywhere, while the idealization and the qualification of different bourgeois states is abstract and completely reliant upon the perception of the individual. Also, I've seen the police do some outrageous shit, even in my small town, so please study some facts before jumping to conclusions like these based on small testimonials that neglect an actual analysis of the reality of this shit.

Here in North America, cops treat you like shit, but they take you to jail first so nobody sees and therefore very few people ever figure out that there's something wrong with them. Then there's all that "protect and serve" propaganda that gets shoved down your throat from day one.
Not too far from where I live, an insane man got shot and killed on a residential street a few days ago. He was wearing a hospital gown and carrying a pair of scissors.

Its not abstract, the ability to do something without getting harrassed or arrested is not abstract.

That's like saying that Wendy's is better then McDonalds, thus Wendy's is a highly-acclaimed fancy 5-star restaurant.
The sheer insanity of the argument is very visible.

As someone who has lived in both the first and third world's I have to say that hands down cops in America are better than cops in the third world. But then again that's not really something worth jumping up and down for. Because cops in the third world are quite awful, and in America they just happen to be less awful.
So fuck the police worldwide am I right.

Indian police may be worse, but the American police who raided and dispersed the DC occupiers yesterday engaged in overkill bordering on brutality.
