View Full Version : Deleting Facebook Account

I just deleted my FB account, it takes two weeks for them to do it. As an organizing tool, it was ineffective - there is no substitute for personal contact and asking someone for their email address is more personal and effective. Contacting people I knew in the past was depressing, we aren't the same people we knew at the time, best not to stir memories. It was mildly amusing communicating with other activists, sharing photos and links, etc. But there are sites better suited to that purpose, and it is just lazy to use FB for that purpose with people you know personally. All the bullshit about what's his fuck founder, a billion dollars in profits, the advertising profiling, and the FBI monitoring, and I couldn't stomach it anymore. Hadn't touched it in months anyway. I'm wondering if they'll even let me delete it, or if the "delete" option means something else.

I like using FB, but it's going to get dangerously unsafe once everyone is forced into the Timeline layout this week. If you have any really embarrassing posts from 2007, or anything you might regret saying now, I would recommend purging your FB all week. Because that shit is going to be accessible within a click of a button now and hitting everyone's wall.
Among much more serious privacy concerns.

Yeah, but you can get the same articles elsewhere. And is it worth supporting a nasty company and getting your shit monitored? Maybe, if you like it that's cool. Living in a capitalist society we can't avoid nasty companies if we consume, which we must to live. No need to criticize facebook users over fastfood consumers or anybody else. Just seems like even in the short time I've used it it's gotten nastier and nastier, more corporate, money centered and closer ties to the government.

I wholeheartedly with the both of you. Facebook is getting creepy and completely invasive. As is Google, so don't pretend we're all just going to migrate to whatever the fuck this plus thing is and things will be just rosy.

I deleted my FB this week also. The negatives far outweigh the positives.

February 9th.

A lot of stories, statuses, commments, etc. will get republished. Gonna suck for the all the married-couples who suddenly have to relive their past with their ex's and see everything they wrote about that relationship. Talk about awkward...

And what about the future generations, who will grow up without a semblance of what it means to have personal privacy, and who's whole life has suddenly become the equivalent of a reality show on the internet. I worry about my little nephews. Through photobucket, facebook, google, flip, and countless other media sharing services, their likeness exists in countless databases all over the world, and what's worse, nobody in my family has any right to own those images, because you forfeit your rights to them when you upload.

Yeahh, I'm going to need to go back and delete about 6-7 years worth of shit... from when they opened it up to high school students

If it's bad enough I'll just delete my facebook. Or delete, start a new one, and re-friend everybody ... then be careful about what I say this time ...

I have friends from all over the world who travel a lot and don't necessarily have addresses so I find facebook useful for keeping up with these friends only. I pretend my page is being watched all the time and post accordingly.
