A Federal Court Jury spent the morning deliberating and has ruled in favor of the family of a man shot and killed by a police officer.

The court ruled in favor of Jim family, awarding $20,000 for loss of life, but did not award any money for excessive force or punitive damages.

The family of Jim was suing former Anytown, USA Corporal Cop, after The Cop shot and killed Jim two years ago, but Jim's brother-in-law, Bob, said it wasn't about the money.

"It was more about saying 'hey, you did something wrong', let's let the public, and let's let the jury and the courts decide whether you really did something wrong."

The attorney for Jim's family, Mr. Smith, said, "The family was happy with it, because the verdict just went their way. They were never about the money, I must say, they just wanted a trial, they wanted everybody to know what happened."

Jim's sister, Jimette, added, "He didn't need to do what he did, let's put it that way. It doesn't take six shots to stop somebody."

The ruling was equally pleasing for the defense, while The Cop avoided media members, he lawyer said, The Cop hopes this will be the end of a long ordeal.

Lawyer for cop said, "Very satisfied, very happy."

"He's tremendously relieved and that's about the extend of what he said to me, is 'Lawyer for cop, I'm really glad this is over', and so hopefully there is closure."

It was January 20th 2010 when Jim was driving drunk and nearly hit The Cop as he exited his parked patrol car. A chase ensued, and when it ended, Jim's car was in a ditch but was still moving.

During his testimony The Cop said he believed his life was in danger because Jim would not surrender, and the car could have been used as a weapon, that's when The Cop fired up to 7 shots into Jim's car, killing him.

The family of Jim claims that The Cop used excessive force, while the defense argued the use of lethal force was justified because Jim was not surrendering and was using his car as a deadly weapon.

Thursday's jury decision was the one the family had hoped for.

Jimette, Jim's sister, said, "All I can say is my brother's now resting in peace, because it's all done."

But Lisa says, regardless of the verdict, the void of a loved on gone is something no judge or jury can mend.

"Am I happy? No, my brother's gone."

In 2010 The Cop was fired from the Anytown, USA police department as a result of the case, and he pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, spending 30 days in the Anytown County.

The Cop still has credential as a police officer, and can apply to be a cop again. Glad a cop got what was coming too him, but it's still sad that a man who didn't need to die, died.

Changed the names of the cop's and victim's families. For both my privacy and theirs. This was my local news, figured it might be relevant and you guys would've liked to hear about it. Sorry for no link. Sorry for the lack of creativity in the name changing.

You're right, but at least we got 20% of something instead of 100% of nothing right?
