So basically in Sweden we(autonomous left) have started organising bus tours where we show the actual real life class society that we live in. We call it "grow your class hate". This has got a huge reaction in the media describing it as "upper-class safaris" and now everyone is talking about the class society and wealth inequality. The liberals and the upper class are going crazy.
Basically the tours have been organised in the three biggest cities of Sweden where you first visit poor working class areas and then the bus takes you in to the upper class areas. The upper class areas are described as the "problem areas" and segregated ghettos of the rich with high criminality(mainly economic). The upper class kids have been out throwing eggs at the bus and sent a lot of racist, sexist and class hate against workers over the internet.
The bus tours are organised by the revolutionary group "Allt t Alla"(Everything for Everybody). And for the last week they have been at the top of the news of every major newspaper and taken part in all the important shows and debates on television and radio, they have even been called "PR-geniuses". The twitter-tag "Classhate" have been one of the most trending in Sweden the last week...
Tonight they and working class youth from the poorer working class areas were on the biggest debate show on TV in Sweden and totally smashed the upper class kids and the liberals.
Right wing politician debating: "I am actually a professional politician and work with social problems every day"
Kid from Swedens most heavily populated suburb: "So what? I am actually an ordinary citizen and live with these problems every day."
Even made the Wall Street Journal:
The Class War Tourof Sweden?
Sweden is often held up as the model of an equitable economy. Its the antiplutonomy.
It has among the lowest or the lowest by many measures rate of inequality in the world. The Swedish Model is often held up by the left as a policy nirvana, with high taxes, generous social programs and low unemployment.
But a new bus tour is giving tourists a different view of Sweden. Its called the Upper-Class Safari and it takes tourists through the lower class part of Stockholm and then to the wealthier suburbs. The Loca (http://www.thelocal.se/38810/20120130/)l, Swedens English-language newspaper, said the group running the tours wants visitors to know that Sweden isnt the class-free paradise its made out to be.
The tour group calls on prospective sightseers to develop their hate of the class system.
But much of the hate seems to be coming from local Swedes. Some residents of Solsidan the upscale neighborhood toured by the bus have thrown eggs at the tour bus as it passes.
It is sad that adults use their time and money to come out here and look, one resident told the local paper. Another resident complained to the police citing invasion of privacy.
All of this is surprising for a country thats famed for its lack of class tensions. And maybe its the wrong country for true high-class safari.
The idea is much better suited to the U.S. As Ive written before, a plutonomy tour of the U.S. with bus tours of the mean streets of Bridgeport followed by a mega-mansion tour of Round Hill Road in Greenwich, or West Palm and Palm Beach could prove hugely popular in our current age of populism.
Would it be helpful to the national discourse? Probably not. At the same time, I dont think theyd do any real harm. Voyeurism (on both the high and low ends) should not be confused with class warfare. And the billionaires of South Ocean Drive could always instruct their butlers to hurl eggs at the tour buses.
Its no worse than yet another Celebrity Home Tour.
Would you take a Plutonomy Tour?
