I realize the historical origins, Platt Amendment, Spanish-American war ect and that America pays Cuba but why the hell does Cuba allow this?

Because not allowing it would mean war with the United States. Which is something Cuba can not afford and will probably lose.
They do not recognize the leas by the way....and content it is illegal under international law.

To add to this if i am not mistaken Castro also refused the leas payments.

Here's a radical idea:
There's a patent injustice. The injured party seeks to resolve the injustice without resort to bloodshed, because they understand that no matter how long it may take, history is on their side and it sets an example for how neocolonialism and imperialism is alive and well in 2012.
Just a thought.

I've often wondered why a bigger international fight wasn't waged back in the day. But having done a little research I came to the conclusion that the US desperately wanted that. It would give them an excuse to say that Cuba was saber rattling. And that's all those lunatic cuban expats in miami need. If the US would invade Grenada because a few med students couldn't get their pizza then bulldozing Cuba to "protect" gitmo is not out of the question.

Because, seizing US government property in the year 2012 will get twenty million tons of steel and angry right wing nutcases on your ass. It doesn't matter if you're a US citizen or a sovereign state. Hell, if they were willing to fight a ten year long ILLEGAL war in Iraq, what do you think they are going to do if you take their shit?

Just to add to the already-established fact that Cuba rejects the occupation but can do nothing practical about it: in protest, Cuba continues to refuse the "payments" made by the US government under the illegal colonialist treaty.

Actually the trots in cuba back in the day demonstrated against the us occupation of guantanamo. The psp , the stalinist party, smashed up their hq and printing presses for it.

I wonder why the USSR didn't blockade Guantanamo during the missile crisis by mining the harbor and started boarding US civilian ships under the Prize Rules under the Hague Conventions and threaten the US with unrestricted submarine warfare against US shipping if they try to interfere with the USSR's blockade of Guantanamo.

Well, when you say "refuse payment", what that really means from what I've heard is that the Castros just put all the checks the US sends them in a drawer somewhere.

Yes, why didn't Cuba execute an act of war while the USSR and USA were on the brink of a nuclear exchange?

It would be the USSR reacting to the US's blockade with its own blockade. Basically telling the USA if they stop and search USSR boats bound to Cuba, then the USSR will stop and search boats bound to Guantanamo, using the Haugen Conventions to justify searching American freighters going to Guantanamo and seizing them if they have any war supplies on them under the Prize Rules.

There was a rash of nuclear missiles in Turkey reminding the soviets that you only play poker if you have a very good poker face.

You can't show weak when you are dealing with imperialism, it would have put the USSR in a much better position if during the Cuban missile crisis that the USSR acted on ridged logic, that the USSR will seize American vessels if the USA seizes USSR vessels period, that the USSR would be acting on the rights granted to the USSR through the Haugen Conventions just like the USA.

psy i don't think you understand just how close the world was to literally being a smouldering irradiated stone.
in any case, the US planes not even 100 miles off of Cuba are p. decent deterrent for attacking Gitmo.

The point of MAD is to make the other side think you won't stand down without the other side at least agreeing to a compromise.

A blockade is not a attack on Gitmo, it would be sieging Gitmo by stopping supplies from getting into Gitmo to starve US troops in Gitmo out like the USSR tried with West Germany and the USSR was not paralyzed in fear of a nuclear war then.
Meaning you have a USSR fleet parked in internal waters making it clear they have no intention of attacking US forces they just want to search all ships heading to Guantanamo to ensure the US is not shipping nuclear weapons to Guantanamo and if the US complies with USSR searches they will order USSR freighters to comply to US Naval searches looking for nuclear weapons going to Cuba.
