I don't even drink anymore but I have to say that if I had to choose between the two it is Tullamore Dew hands down. No other Irish blend even comes close in its grassy flavor. It keeps releasing bouquet long after consumed yet doesn't leave an after taste if you can understand that. Bread Pudding (American) with a Tullamaore Dew butter cream sauce is amazing! I bartended for years and couldn't give it away though. Jamesons or crappy Bushmills seemed to be the favored whiskey. For now I'd like to know your preference and why.

And yes I've been to the Jameson distillery and it didn't beat the bottled taste of Tully!

Im Irish, from Cork - about 20km from Midleton where Jameson is made. I used to work there doing deliveries and every now and again they'd give me a bottle to take home. They have the nicest workers there as well.

Anywho, Jameson vs Tullamore Dew?

Jameson is a grade A whiskey distilled in Oak and in the famous brass vats. It has a dry taste and its simular to Scottish Whisky's just without the smoky after taste that they give off. Tullamore Dew is another Grade A whiskey, its a lot easier on the throat and as the OP said it keeps its aroma. Its even more expensive than Jameson (its regular 30yr bottle anyway) and that the reason its even more of a rarity here than Jameson. Tullamore dew is exported more than it is aimed at the Irish market, that said - almost every pub will have it here.

To put it against the heavyweights; Jameson, Powers, Bushmills, Paddy, Tullamore Dew....they're all great whiskeys and they all are unique. Its simply a matter of preference of taste and preference of politics.

Bushmills is named so because of the town in Northern Ireland that it comes from, a ridiculously loyalist stronghold where even upon doing the tour of the distillery last year I didnt feel welcome and the place was draped with Union Jacks and pictures of famous Loyalists...so I dont support them by drinking they're whiskey anymore.

Powers and Paddy are both stong old-school whiskeys with a sharp after taste and I know a lot of old guys who just love them.

I drink mainly Jameson (or jimmy as we call it in Cork) and I do like it. However the BEST IRISH WHISKEY (which makes it the best in the world also :D) in my opinion is Midleton Very Rare. Only fifty bottles are produced every year and cost about €120 in Ireland, I got a bottle at christmas one year and just loved it. I also got a nice case and a letter from the master blender. Out foreign, in the states....I can only imagine what a bottle of this stuff would cost. Its won just about every Whiskey award it could win and its a top beverage.

I can't stand Tullamore Dew. Not sure why exactly, but I've just never liked it. Jameson is ok. I'm not much of a whiskey drinker anyway though, so my opinion is probably too biased.

Pretty sure I'm alone on this one. Guinness and a Tullamore back! In another life perhaps.

Time to step in? I only drink Whiskey when out, unless someone throws a chaser at me. Like to hear about some good American sipping Whiskies, something that would want to make me hide the bottle from Wifey. Wherever I am, drink the local poison, except here. Tuba. Fermented coconut water, home made it's the only liquor I get bad hangover from.
The Rum here is drinkable, in fact we just had earth tremors...might just have one to keep me steady on my feet...

Sipping with food I'd go with Basil Hayden. No question. By itself though it is a little much sometimes.
