View Full Version : Introduction to Rap & Hip-Hop for a Metalhead
Thirsty Crow
1st February 2012, 15:57
Hey people,
The title of the thread kinda speaks for itself but still, here it goes.
I've been listening to rock and metal (much more the latter) all my life, and just occasionally I managed to enjoy a rap/hip-hop song (I can't really tell the difference between rap and hip-hop).
I think that this is due to what I'd call rap minimalism. Instrumentation is scarce, and I'm used to, and like it when all sorts of things are going on at the same moment.
So, recommend me some good shit, bearing in mind what kind of stuff I might like (which should be clear from what I wrote above; in any case, I thin kI'd drool all over some rap with nice and aggressive beats along some rich instrumental layering).

i guess the safest bet would be to start with the Wu Tang Clan along with some of the solo albums that came out of it -- in particular, Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...", Ghostface Killah's "Supreme Clientele", GZA's "Liquid Swords" and definitely ODB's "Brooklyn Zoo".
But I like most of the suggestions in this thread so yeah.

Megaton b-boy 2000 El-P on Handsome Boy Modeling School Album How's your Girl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OGYSwgFJqE)
(Pretty harsh beat and lyrics. Barely listenable, but may appeal to your metal side)
El-P ft. Aesop Rock & Ill Bill - Delorean
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpsF5otkX2Q)
(Check the lectric guitar on this one, pretty metal. There's a lot of really good songs on this album that are pretty fucking noisy. You might also dig track 1 which I could not find on youtube or this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK6RIFKItTg) or this one, which was a single (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leGgNfUAI7w))
You might want to look into Outkast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaYa1bSCg_A)which is known to often use electric distorted guitars in their songs. Also, the offshoot Goodie Mob (well actually Outkast was an offshoot of Goodie Mob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trtZ2wKYRSE) If I'm not Mistaken), is known for their distorted guitars.
And here's some Bun B (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtKURvVIE1w), just because.

Anyway, I don't have a post count high enough to post links, but if you want some real fucking hip-hop, here is what I recommend. Apologies if anything is repeated and if these guys have some homophobic views. It's very common in the rap game, but I don't think homophobia=capitalist

Could you find a song by Hop and a song by Masta Ace and compare how their flows are related? Both of them are fucking awesome.
As for Vinnie Paz: basically,I find it kinda gross to be gay. I hope that works. I think gay sex is gross. So do many other straight people. I'm not anti-gay. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean I support rampant homophobia. I think gay people can do what the fuck they like. Back to the actual topic: yes, it's hard to stomach what he says, but I'd rather see someone bumping Jedi Mind Tricks than see someone bumping some Lil Wayne, Flocka, Drake, Tyler the Creator or any other stupid commercial fucks. And honestly, can anyone besides Immortal Technique on Dance with the Devil match a story song such as Uncommon Valor? Btw, check out "Billions (no, not do with money)- Uncommon Valor: Iraq Edition. I know him in real life, he leads a rap group I'm part of. He's also kinda anti-gay, but I gotta give him respect for the opportunities he's given me (meeting Hopsin, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright. Getting on a track with him that will be released soon).
Tl;dr: Jedi Mind Tricks>Commercial rappers. Check out my dude Billions.
I wish I could post links.

Vinnie Paz has some great songs, but I feel like he's starting to lose his touch. He's running out of exploitatively violent titles for his songs now.
If you want to listen to Jedi Mind Tricks I'd suggest Visions of Gandhi, Servants in Heaven Kings in Hell, and A History of Violence (all of these are albums). My favorite song would have to be Animal Rap.

Gross=/=bigot. I have no problems with gays. I have LGBT friends. I don't think gay people themselves are gay, but I think the sex acts between them are kinda gross. That being said, I would never ban it or ban gay marriage. I've supported gay marriage since I knew anything about politics.
You can't tell me you'd rather watch gay porn than straight porn (assuming you're straight) (no I don't really support the whole porn industry, but that's the only example I could come up with, lol.

Homophobia, sexism, etc. are often hard to avoid when it comes to hiphop. You have to realize that it's just music, and it was meant to shock and offend people.
Now as for more positive rap that really has a good message, my two top picks are the Roots and the late great Guru. They really tell it like it is.

Allright, I'm not gonna post the links but hiphop and metal, look this up
judgement night - a collabo project with big metal and rap artist from that day
heavy metal kings - first it was just a song from Ill Bill and Vinny Paz, now they made an album (not really what I hoped for, and yeah there's a lot to be said about vinny's lyrics)
Cypres Hill - Of course, they did a metallish cd on the skull and bones album and Rise Up, their latest has a firm metal influence (Morello)
Akala - british Mc who plays his own guitar
and if you don't mind the dutch lyrics..
Space Marines
Neuk
and
OSDORP POSSE, founders of dutch hiphop did an album with Nembrionic Hammerdeath (dutch metal) but the made quite a few songs with metalbands..
this one i've gotta post, O.P. and N.H. @ Dynamo open air, huge metal fest, they won the crowd award, slayer finished second.. their version of 'no sleep till brooklyn'
