I'm reading my history book, and I think those changes where for the better. What are your thoughts on it and may I have links to more information on it?

Simple answer. Destroyed BAM, Introduced capitalism, sacking workers, privatise services. Dry law (no alcohol allowed in sudden times as far I remember it was in shops from 17.00 until 19.00), workers started brewing own vodka hura many died. How much we better of from Perestroika that is dispute between workers and upper classes.
I watched plenty programmes from archives about perestroika, still can't get it why Gorbochov wanted to change in reality. He wished change system in party indeed there was stagnation and as he explained party was too old and need young energetic people in charge. Corruption as well he tried to tackle but the problem many of working class went to jails for that.

Rasyte has set forth some excellent specific examples of the economic failures of perestroika. Would add that IMO liberalization also exacerbated the nationalities issue in a way that accelerated centrifugal forces that worsened the Union's ability to survive as a polity. Gorbachev inherited policies from the times of Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev that were time bombs bound to go off in the hands of any well-meaning reformer.
