It is probably a reference to him being of Irish ancestry as well as saying that what he stood for is alive in Ireland.

What's does does Shea mean. Is that the Irish spelling for che?

In this case it is being used due to the similarity of the word "che" and the name "Shea". Shea is an Irish name and is also Shay, O'Shea, O'Shay etc.
