Abortion Bill Amendment of the Day: The Virginia state Senate went ahead today with a bill that would require pregnant women to obtain an ultrasound prior to an abortion, after rejecting a Democratic senators amendment that would have required men to undergo a rectal exam and cardiac stress test prior to obtaining erectile dysfunction medication (http://hamptonroads.com/2012/01/irked-abortion-bill-va-senator-adds-rectal-exams-men).
The amendments author, Fairfax County Democrat Janet Howell, said she was merely trying to add a little gender equality to the bill.
Its requiring [women] to have unnecessary medical procedures, its adding to the cost and its opening them up for emotional blackmail, she told her colleagues from the Senate floor. And I was upset because its disrespectful of doctors. Its forcing them to perform procedures they dont think is necessary.
She says she got the idea for the amendment after watching an erectile dysfunction drug ad which listed the pills myriad side effects.
So, I said, its only fair, that if were going to subject women to unnecessary procedures, and were going to subject doctors to having to do things that they dont think is medically advisory, well, Mr. President, I think we should just have a little gender equity here, Howell said.
The amendment was ultimately defeated by a relatively narrow margin of 21 to 19. Meanwhile, Senate Bill 484 moves forward to a final floor vote tomorrow.

They already do that to men in the US military. Little secret: many male troops, returned from wars in the Middle East and found themselves suffering (usually temporary) erectile dysfuction issues, and went to military docs about it. In order to get Viagra, one had to undergo a series of health tests, questions about lifestyle, and visit a psychologist...amd after that, came the rectal exam. 1-2 months process before receiving pills.

that's kind of like my idea that since black people suffer from so much racism we should beat white people with sticks

Now that did make me laugh Zeekoid--ouch-yikes-golly-egad comrade-perhaps we should simply beat ourselves with sticks as some seem to do.
Policing, could be made much cheaper, just gotta figure a way to Taser myself. Now all I need is a method of locking myself in as punishment.

I took you seriously, a point well made, and to the point. Zeekloid, albeit with humour. Non the worse for that, in fact it hit home the run harder.

Why a rectal exam? Is it to make sure they're not wasting pills on the bottoms?

I still think it's hilarious for radicals to be patting this woman on the back considering who she is.

In al seriousness and slightly on and off topic....
I am not entirely sure this full body scan en heart test feature when somebody has erectile dysfunction is such a bad idea by the way.
20% of men of all ages after 18 have erectile dysfunction. Though the exact numbers are not really set in stone....a lot of those problems can be attributed to endocrine or cardiovascular causes.....or psychological.....or a combination of both.
The common practice these days for medical practitioners is to first find psychological causes annd ascribe either viagra or cialis....both very expensive and often not covered in the medical insurance (IF you even have medical ensurance).
Which is, from a health care perspective, totally non sensical...seeing as 30% of dysfunction has a underlying medical problem which is further enhanced by psychological reasons resulting from the experienced dysfunction.
I have read a masters report on this saying that after experiencing erectile dysfunction most men continue to have these problems because of uncertainties about their "manhood" and "manliness". So they take viagra or cialis to combat this....without looking for the root causes.
But the side effects of both...seeing as they have cardiovascular dilation effects...can be heart and cardiovascular issues....which will further enhance problems. Making somebody more and more dependend on the drugs to have a normal sexlife.
Part of the thesis was the following:
Psychological therapy revolves around security therapy...being sure about yourself. Not having self doubts etc. Which is nice and all...but the advise people get is to talk about the issues with their partners to create a more relaxed and doubt free environment.
Now...I don't know about you guys....but if you have a partner which is understanding....thats fine. And if you have the cash to use viagra or cialis...that may work out just well enough.
But try explaining this to the new girl you picked up in the bar ;) Horrible fact is...most women do not readilly understand or are, understandably, not very inclined to start a relationship with somebody who can not fullfill them sexually.
Ergo..this leads to a perpetuation of the problem.
Health physicians have argued that it is more sensical to first check if there are underlying medical reasons. Or perhaps lifestyle issues...food, alcohol, drug intake for example. Or lack of sleep.
So aside from the fact that this should never be law and forced upon somebody..or should be used to deny pills.....it makes sense to have a total physical checkup in caes of dysfunction.
Rectal exams however....well...fuck that unless it is fro your prostate

We cant appreciate when the center right take for a change a stand to the exteme right just because its the thing to do?
I assume even revolutionaries can appreciate reformism as legal abortion, right to unionize, universal suffrage etc etc.

Honestly, these Chauvinist politicians need to get it through their thick skull that women are not their inferiors and understand they have an irrefutable right to choose.
The proposal set forth was something I liked: I believe if you make it uncomfortable for the oppressing side than maybe they will actually give the oppressed a slight break (unlikely, but still).
