Does anyone know what the relations between these two now?
Before the end of the USSR(CCCP), something like 80% of Cuban Revenue came from there.
What were the immediate affects on Cuba?

Its economy was hurt badly, as the soviet union was the largest importer of cuban suger cane(cubas main industry), which it bought at a higher than usual rate, to help Cuba. It's because of its collapse that Cuba entered what it calls 'the special period', where some moves towards a more capitalist economy have had to take place. Such as increased efforts to attract tourists, the allowance of some private enterprise.

I suspect they have connections where there is mutual benefit. Obviously it will be convenient for them to trade since there wil be Russians who speak Cuban, Cubans who speak Russian and shipping routes still in operation. However, the new Russian leadership are not friends of socialism.

Neither is Castro. They should get along splendidly.
