I'm not a fan of a lot of jazz but I heard Ornette Coleman's "free jazz" and I like him a lot. He reminds of a jazz counterpart to the noise rock bands that I listen to. because it can be such atonal chaotic music, it kind of reminds me of being like a jazz counterpart to the Butthole Surfers "Locust Abortion Technician".
post free jazz and artists you like. I don't know of any besides Ornette Coleman so I'll post the obvious.

Sun Ra did some free jazz stuff, although I'm not too familiar with it.
Some really nice free jazz is the album On the Corner by Miles Davis. Also, *****'s Brew is pretty good and free jazzy (particularly guitarist John McLaughlin does a really nice job).
Of course these two that I recommended fall more into the subgenre, "fusion" but there's a lot of overlap.
I'll post some Youtubes when I find something I think you might like.

Anywho, like I said, more fusion than free, but maybe you'll like it.

I dunno if this is considered free jazz, but if you like "the noise rock bands that I listen to" then this is pretty fucking ridiculous.

First strap yourself to the chair, tie down any other furniture and be prepared to re-wallpaper. Then put on the Peter Brotzmann Octet's Machine gun, play it loud and enjoy!
Now that is what I would call old school free jazz! His more recent stuff is also rip roaring.
Another classic is John Coltrane s Ascension
Anything by Cecil Taylor. His music is so rich, complex and brilliant: it refuses to be sonic wallpaper.
A fantastic fusion of rock and free jazz is to be found on King Crimson's Live Album (the one with black cover). There is a skull cleaving sax solo on 21st century schizoid

I'm a HUGE fan of free jazz. It's without doubt my favourite genre of music.
Another classic is John Coltrane s Ascension
Ascension is a superb album, but I think most of the albums recorded after it are better, and for me, Coltrane's best album is without doubt "Interstellar Space":

Really, there's nothing more beautiful to me than that album (although there are plenty of things equally beautiful). By the way, for those who like "Interstellar Space", be sure to check out vol 2 of John Zorn's "50th Birthday Celebration" series. I'm pretty sure it's something of a tribute to "Interstellar Space" - it's pure free jazz with Zorn on sax and Milford Graves on drums, and the first track is titled "Inserted Space". Zorn's got one over on Coltrane in that he can circular breath, but he doesn't capture the intense "spiritual" mood of Coltrane's recording (still, very few people have ever captured that mood. Pharoah Sanders is probably the master of it).
My favourite guitarist:

Another favourite - I love his unqiue combination of free jazz and droney minimalism:

"Strange Strings" is one of Ra's craziest albums. If you enjoyed that track, be sure to pick up the whole album. He collected a load of exotic string instruments plus some homemade instruments, distributed them to people who'd never played them before, and recorded the results. The CD has a track called "Door Squeak", which is, as the title suggests, largely built on Sun Ra making squeaking noises with a creaky door.

Another one of my favourites are the Art Ensemble of Chicago. These guys are probably a good place to start for people who haven't heard much free jazz and are looking to explore the genre. Two of their more conventional albums "Les Stances a Sophie" and "The Third Decade".

As for their less accessible stuff, their BYG albums "A Jackson in Your House", "Message to Our Folks" and "Reese and the Smooth Ones", plus their second album "People in Sorrow", are absolute classics of free jazz. If you're interested in free jazz, you should definitely have at least a couple of those. ("Phase One" and "Chi-Congo" are also favourites of mine.)
BYG Actuel in general is well worth checking out. They're one of my favourite record labels - they specialized almost entirely in free jazz.
Just a few favourites from BYG: Archie Shepp's "Blase" is a wonderful combination of free jazz and blues, and "Yasmini, A Black Woman", although it's not so free at times, is fascinating for its use of African rhythms & instruments on the title track (and I think these days it's released with Shepp's "Poem for Malcolm", which is very, very free). Alan Silva's "Luna Surface" is one of the noisiest albums I've ever heard; it's pretty much just a half-hour wall of noise (Brotzmann's "Machine Gun" might well be one of the angriest free jazz albums, but I think "Luna Surface" managed to be a lot more chaotic). Dave Burrell's "Echo" is also completely off the wall.

That Sax Ruins one is fantastic, Kontrrazvedka, but I'd say it's avant-garde jazz rather than free jazz. It's almost wholly precomposed.
I looked them up online, and apparently they do covers of Ruins songs. Ruins never clicked with me that much (except the albums they did with Derek Bailey), but I might have to check them out again now. I'll definitely be seeking more of Sax Ruins.
Matana Roberts now has a place on my to-hear list, too.
