A Cassia County sheriff’s deputy is charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly shoving down his daughter’s boyfriend and pushing his thumb into the man’s eye socket.
According to court records, Deputy Jarrod Adam Thompson, 44, was charged after the case was turned over by the sheriff’s office to Idaho State Police for investigation. Melissa Moody, deputy attorney general for the state, has been named as special prosecuting attorney in the case.
Thompson pleaded not guilty to the charge in September.
A jury trial has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m., Feb. 2, in Cassia County 5th District Magistrate Court.
Cassia County Undersheriff George Warrell said he could not confirm whether Thompson has been placed on administrative leave, citing that the matter is a personnel issue.
Warrell said the department has policies in place dealing with officers who receive a criminal conviction, but he said he is not certain what action, if any, would be taken against an officer for a misdemeanor conviction.
“Any discipline would be based on a review of the facts after conviction,” Warrell said.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the ISP investigator, on July 25 Thompson, who was off-duty and in civilian clothing, went to the man’s Burley residence looking for his daughter.
Thompson allegedly told investigators that he did not approve of the relationship between the two due to the difference in their ages and the man’s criminal history.
Thompson and the man got into a verbal altercation on the back porch of the residence, and Thompson allegedly grabbed the man’s arm and placed it behind his back in an arm-bar hold.
Thompson allegedly pushed the man into a door and the altercation led out into the alley behind the residence. Thompson then allegedly pushed the man again, who then struck a garbage can and fell to the ground.
The man told investigators that while he was on the ground, Thompson allegedly placed his thumb in his left eye socket and applied pressure. The man also stated Thompson stuck his thumb on his esophagus and choked him.
According to court records, the man sustained minor injuries that included a rash on his back, reddening and mild swelling to the corner of one eye, and reddening of the skin on his neck.
The man told police he did not touch Thompson.
According to court records, Thompson did not sustain any injuries.
